Hi All,finally got my engine started and running pretty well on my 69 FJ40.The problem I am having is it starts right up then wants to idle very high, like I am pushing on the gas pedal or reving the throttle cable right on the carb.
I have a couple of pics. of my set up.It's a 71 F engine with a carb. from a 71 also.New throttle cable&choke cable.Does it look like I have it set up right? I get a nice spray of gas when I manually push accelerator pump.

The 1st. pic.shows my finger pointing at the Throttle lever.there is a hole there on the outer flange that I rigged with a piece of bailing wire to pull back towards drivers side(cause it got too hot in there as it warmed up to do it by hand). When it is revving up I can just pull lever and it idles right down.I never have to give it gas.But it will not idle right if I don't do this.
Is this a simple Fast idle screw adjustment? Or am I way off here?Seems to be the carb.needs adjustment.
I have a FSM on the F engine and a good old Haynes Manual.Lots of reading I have done.I need to also search here more, but wanted to try and narrow it down first.
Thanks,John

From the pics I can definitely see that the throttle positioner is not hooked up properly. The linkage from the diaphram to the pivoting arm is supposed to be horizontal, with the arm in a basically vertical position, as opposed to the horizontal one you have it in.

Disconnect that, rotate it, reconnect it, and see if that helps. I kind of doubt it will solve your immediate problem, but it needs to be done anyways.

Next [after you promise to, and actually do fix the TP linkage] try loosening the tension nut on the accelerator cable to give the cable slack and see what affect that has.

Best

Mark A.

Thanks Mark,I did get the cables and accel.bracket that bolts to the carb.from you some time ago.I will try and fix what you said is not right, but I am not sure I am following what you said.I am looking at drawings from my manuals and can't seem to find a good one to go off.
Spector has some good color photos I will check out also.
John

tough to see in the picture, but I thought there was a spring to pull against the accelerator cable, effectively returning it back to center after letting off the accelerator.

His finger is resting on it in the first pic.:)

Again, slightly off topic, but it looks like the brake master is losing a bolt.

Is your finger on a spring, or just a piece of baling wire?

Thanks for the replys,Ok so you guys say I am missing a return spring there where I have the piece of bailing wire rigged up.That would make sense, because I am pulling it back with the wire and it idles great.

Mark,I still don't know how to fix/flip TP linkage.Looked at the carbs.on Spector(lots of color pics.)I did see a pic.with the accel.cable support bracket mounted a little higher up(next bolt up that bolts the carb together) than the base of the carb.like I have mine. And I did not see one with the return spring where my bailing wire is rigged.Must go on after accel.cable is hooked up?Where do you hook the other end of the spring to? They had springs for sale for later year carbs.I looked at 10/69-9/71&10/71-9/72 carbs.
I will do a search and find out the date mine was made.I have the stamp date info on an old thread.

Tightened up some connections and it was running better today after work.Starts right up on 1st. turn of key.Brakes are not working yet still have to finish up rear disc.conversion and brake lines, that's why m/c was not tight.Batt.needs to be secured for sure, but truck has not moved on it's own power in 10 years!I keep working on it then stop,I am really trying to do it this time around, just need some help here and there.

Here are two pictures of the spring from my 8/71. There is a F shaped bracket bolted onto the carb that the spring clips onto, with the other end being on the throttle linkage.

yes it needs cleaning too :)

Thanks for the photos Merlin! That bracket looks easy enough to fab up with some light gage metal. The spring looks like it does not have to be to specific of a size.

Spector has one listed p/n#042-33A for a 3/69-10/69 for a whole $1.15.
Next part #042-67B up was for 9/72-9/73 and not in stock.I think I have some springs around to try and make it work.

Hey Merlin,I am working in Emeryville off Powell street at the big Novartis campus(Emeryville research center).Therma is the company we are working for, just working on the roof putting down sleepers/crubs for BIG mech.units.High securty area, flashlight cops running all over there.I guess they test for vaccines on animals, wierd science stuff! Hour and a half commute x2 for me it sucks!(not Emeryville)

I think there is more security for theft than protestors. I've had my FJC broken into and it was in a gated garage. Emeryville is ok, we're only here for the work, I prefer Loomis by far.

Unfortunately my 40 is in Loomis, by Sac, otherwise you could come over and take a look.

Yea Merlin,I would of been stoked to stop by and check out your 40.The building we are working on is real close to the big AMC movie place, just across the tracks there.
Back to the carb.from the pics. you sent it looks like my throttle plate bracket is a little off.maybe that's what Mark is talking about.say mines at 6 oclock and rotate up to around 9?(I am talking about where I have the bailing wire hooked to)
That spring of yours Merlin looks like one from the clutch, but prob way smaller.Yea It does look like your engine needs a little cleaning!

Update on my project, made up a bracket for a spring, got the throttle plate rotated and hooked it together and it runs way better.
I just had a few springs to choose from, but found one to get some tension on there.
I then drove it for the 1st.time in 10 years(only real slow up and back on the driveway)No brakes yet,but totally flat gravel so no worries!!!
The 3-sp.feels way different on the floor from the colum.I will update my build thread also.
Thanks for the help!
John
