hi guys i was just wondering what dip stick everybody has used with there V8 and ram horn manifolds. i have always had a hard time geting at my dip stick and was wondering what everybody else has been using. or if there is a correct one to use with these manifolds or a longer one from like a van that will snake its way closer to the front. ,i always have to pull mine out through the fender opening i hate it. if i turned it to a different position i can hear the dipstick scraping on what i asume is the crank when the engine is running .

any pics of yours would be greatly appreciated.:lol:

I don't recall having any problem with the dipstick when I was using ramhorn manifolds.

I'm finding it hard to visualize how the dip stick could hit the crank. Only way this seems possible is if the dipstick, not the tube, but the dipstick itself is bent. Otherwise, the dipstick will go straight into the oil pan and not contact the crank.

The original one

My 350 came out of a Sept 69 Chevy Belair which came from the factory with Ramshorn manifolds. :D

I'm not near the truck right now but I'll see if I can snap/find a picture for you.

it is,

if it is to the side it makes a scraping noise . i would like one that points to the front, maybe a longer one . maybe i will try a different dip stick and see if it makes a scraping noise
can i rotate it all the way to the front and have it resting against the exhaust manifold or not a good idea

If this is still your setup then it seems like you could just rotate the tube so that it points more to the side or to the front:

I bought mine at Orielly Auto Parts. I believe it was a Mr. Gasket dipstick and it seems to work fine for my SBC V8 w/ Ram Horns. My dipstick is on the drivers side BTW.

this isn't the best pic but its all i got. the dipstick is suppose to be turned up, right against the manifold. the factory ram horns have a bump on each side of the dipstick and a slight bevel behind it to hold it in place and yours has been ground off when you or who ever cleaned them up to give them the smooth look.

and i forgot to add that the chrome dipsticks are a little short and will probable melt the rubber ring out of the dipstick from the heat of the manifold. you need a dipstick with a tube (the part in the block) that's about 9 &1/4 inches long. they are getting harder and harder to find. i found mine on eBay after months of searching for sbc dipsticks and tubes. i had to ask every seller how long they were to get the right one. good luck!

The stick is on the right side by the steering box. It is 22" in length. As posted earlier it is a stock 350 that came with Ram's horn Manifolds in a 69 Chev BelAir.

Here are a couple of pictures from 10 years back... a few things have changed since then.

hey pbgbottle i found the package the dipstick tube came in. its GM part number 3865664 and its made in canada. you might check and see if its available at the dealer and maybe they will have a dipstick to go with the tube. it measures just over 10 inches long and i had to cut it down to 9 & 1/4 to go with my dipstick. i broke the original tube off at the block and had to find another tube to replace it. good luck!
