So here is an interesting problem. I put my crank pulley back on and it lines up just fine with the alt pulley. The water pump pulley is a whole different deal. It sits back a smidge to far. I put 1 washer per bolt back there to try to shim it up but it still is off. Not a great deal mind you but enough that I am asking about it. I can't put any more washers back there to shim up the pulley because then it won't mate right to the pump. Any ideas? Suggestions? WTF happened?

A spacer goes behind the pulley. Part #12 in the pic.

Sor.com doesn't show a spacer. Are you sure that there is. Spacer between the pump flange and the pulley?

Do you have a fan clutch? If so, there is no spacer. There are two different lengths of waterpumps BTW. I think all the direct drive fans(metal and 6-blade plastic) had a spacer. IIRC, I had mine behind the pulley, but the diagram I posted shows it in front of the pulley:hhmm:

How far off is it?

This pic shows it behind the pulley??????

in addition to removing your crank pulley did you replace/remove either the alternator or water pump?

Is there any chance that the issue is with my crank pulley... go to the end of my buildup thread for pictures. I did crank it to 130 ft/lbs and it was rather easy to get to that. Maybe I didn't put the crank pulley on far enough and I need to still wrench on it till it lines up?

there are also several water pump pulley stylles i have at least 4 different ones on the shelf good luck

It's a 79 motor with the 2 groove pulley and the water pump is for a 79. I am using the inside groove. Both the crank and the wp pulleys are the original ones that came off the thing. The more I look at it the more I am suspecting that the crank pulley isn't on all the way even though the crank nut is torques down at 130 ft/lbs. Take a look at the very last page of my build up. The link is in my sig. The last photos I put up were from when I put the crank on last night. I
can't put up photos as I am on my iPhone.

If it is the crank like I suspect, how will I know when it is seated properly. Is there a certain distance it should be from the timing cover? I also want to point out that the threads of the crank are right at the end of the threads on the crank nut.
