Howdy (Pics Added)

Thought I'd introduce myself--just signed up at the advice of Rock Taxi, but don't hold that against him.

I currently have a 1969 FJ-40 in the garage with a wonderfully straight body. And that's about where the sweetness stops.

It has a TPI 350 that sounds about like a Cummins with all its rattling, a 700R4 tranny that leaks faster than I can fill it, and a NP231 that is mounted, get this, upside down.

It has a cage sawzall'd out of a CJ-7, hard mounted with lag bolts, power steering that must be from a riding lawn mower, seats from a Camaro, Dukes of Hazzard wheels and Betty Boop floor mats.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to help me rehab this into a reliable daily driver for $10K or less.

My loose plan at this point is this:

--rebuild of motor and trans

--power steering install

--SOA conversion and 35's

--install of an AC unit (it is Texas after all)

--family cage and seats

Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you.
Rule #1, don't keep track on how much you are spending on it, it hurts less that way ;)

'69 is a good year, now how about some pics.

Advise? Sell it and you can retire early !!

Oh did I forget to mention the chrome lids on the headlights?

Dude, that's a nice friggin' truck. You've got a pretty good start.

Yep, it's awfully pretty. I had originally bought it to cut up into a crawler, but the body is just too pretty, I couldn't do it.

Now I'm thinking mild lift, medium size tires, use it for a daily and family wheeling.

That thing has a better body on it than most newer cruisers around this here part of the woods.

Nice...gotta love the red! Paint that top back to white and you'll save a few degrees in that Texas heat!

I am in utter shock at how straight that body is. Great starting point. Good luck with the build and keep us all posted on the progress.

My suggestions....

Borrow my bender and shop and build a cage.

Bring the motor over and I will help you fix / rebuild it. Free labor - it might be worth more than you pay for it.

We can fix the trans. If it shifts ok - we can throw new seals in it for cheap.

Tcase - I would love to hear what other opinions there are. An Atlas might not be a bad option since you don't want to do an adapter. I think it might fit in your budget to buy an adapter and put a Dana 300 in it.

It's fixable, and worth it.

Some of this potential work might cost you a pair of chrome headlight lids. Those are awesome!!!!!
