I was told to ask and read stuff from here from the guys in the 80's fourm. I might be in position to buy a 02 or 03 Lexus LX for a smoking deal from my client. I have a 80 series truck and are extremely happy with it. Never cross my mind that I would get rid of it. how many of you would purchase the 100 series truck again. Tell me what are the pro and cons compare to my 93 LC.. It is the only thing I can compare to. I have 200k trouble free and very happy miles. No rock craw but I do take it out to give it a good beating sometimes.

If you do a search for 80 vs. 100 you'll have hours of reading. (some better than others and most say the exact same thing)

I went from an 80 to a 100 and for my uses, would never go back. They are very different trucks. The refinement of the 100 is miles ahead of the 80. The V8 has the power that the 80 lacks. 100's are very capable off road trucks but don't have the solid front axle or all of the modification options of the 80 so if you are a hard core off-roader, the 80 would be a better choice. I have mine about as modded as you can for a 100 (minus the UCA's) and it takes me anywhere I would want to go, and most places a fully modded 80 would go, but not everywhere.

For roadtrips or expedition type runs, there is no comparison. 100 wins hands down.

Reliability for a 100 is exceptional as it is for the 80's. There are a few weak points (front dif - though mine made it 150k before I switched it out by choice) and you'll read about some tranny issues with certain models (could be overblown internet hype) but overall an extremely reliable truck.

Good luck in your decision. As they say, go hundy and you'll never go back.

Search - many, many threads on this very topic. I too went from a very built 80 to a now moderately built 100. The 100 has more power (but not mind-blowing), more interior room (which makes for a bigger truck for tight trails), and more creature comforts (mmmmm, heated seats). I hate to say, but your 80 probably isn't worth much. Keep it around, build it into a more hard core rock rig and get the LX too.

haha his 80 isn't worth much :D

I would never get an 80 over a 100, but that's me I like the creature comforts the 100 has that the 80 can only dream about.....

If I could add another Land Cruiser to my stable it would be a 78 series Troopie (Brand spankin new of course), mostly gutted and geared towards a very utilitarian role for expeditions into areas where it is better to have a diesel.

Get the 100, keep your 80... you can never have too many Cruisers :)

I own each and if you are looking for comfort and a luxury vechicle buy it. My wife does not like my 80 in the city due to of lack of power and comfort. I just did a 2500 mile trip from Colorado to Ill/Wisconsin and the 100 was amazing, could not imagine doing it in the 80.

Cost of ownrship on the 100 is less also, no birf's and brake pad's last a lot longer and they stop on a dime.

Keep your 80 and buy the 100.

That exactely the info I need. How often do you guys get your alignment done? I had their late 80's truck with IFS. It was always out of wack. That I do not want to deal with. Hey, how much more power is it really? I haven't driven it yet. can you feel it from your butt dyno? Thanks for the info, if you guys have more, keep them coming, Good or bad. I gotta make a decision today. I have no aaccess to the net once I leave my house. Looks very likely that I will be a 100 owner. How's the front pad situtaion? Is it a lot better then the 80? thanks

Jeff

I haven't had any alignment problems, but then mines not lifted yet. Some of the guys with lifts and 35's on here should answer that question. You will love the 100. Get a 100 and swap out the front end with an ARB and you've pretty much eliminated the only factory issue with them.... unless you get an earlier one with the exhaust manifold problems.

Alignment should be done on a regular basis, regardless of vehicle. Compared to the 212hp I6, the 230hp V8 has some get up and go. It's not off the line fast, but you can at least get moving up an on-ramp or pass easily.

Pads are a wear item, depends on your braking habits. The pads have more surface area that 80 series pads and are thicker.

swap out the front end with an ARB and you've pretty much eliminated the only factory issue with them....

The one you're looking at has a 4 pinion front diff, not nearly as many issues with it as the 98/99 2 pinion diff. For the use you're describing, you won't need to worry about it.

one more thing I need to ask is that according to her, my client, that it is a 2 wheel drive. Did they make such an aninal? I am shock to hear, but then again, she just doesn't know.

Never a 2 wheel drive. Blasphemy.....

Full time 4 wheel drive, with locking center differential and atrac traction control.

100 vs. 80...it's like asking what's better, strawberry or chocolate ice cream?

Most of this has been discussed, but anyway:

100: larger (+ on road, - off road), faster, safer, quieter, more comfortable, better braking, better features, IFS (+ on, - off) gives good handling/steering, ATRAC/VSC. Newer overall chassis carries obvious advantages.

80: smaller (- on, + off), solid front axle articulates better than IFS, terrific styling (subjective), best out-of-box wagon for 'wheeling ever. Can be built for extreme off-road driving (rocks, tight trails) moreso than 100.

Both: amazing reliability/longevity/quality.

Perfect world? A 100 for daily, expeditions, road trips, moderate 'wheeling, and a built 80 for the gnarly, technical, challenging Jeep trails.

I want a 100 as my next rig if this one dies.

make sure the CDL engages if youre buying it from someone who thought it was 2wd ;)

Another consideration between the 80 and 100 is towing capacity. I love the look of the 80, but the 100 is a much more capable tow vehicle.

I have been doing some research in the past half hour. The big V8 requires premium gas? 91 octane?

Gotta pay to play.

Many people run regular or mid-grade there is a thread on this subject somewhere here... try a quick search.

(edit) Here you go. Premium gas debate

i've never run premium and the truck has never complained. Also, the 100 series has much better acceleration and braking. I can out accelerate and out brake my buddy's 80 series with me pulling a 3K pound boat and him pulling nada. My dream cars are still a 97 supra and 97 land cruisers. Been that way since 1996.
