70 series double cab

This is what Crushers should do with his surplus LJ78s this winter.

This one is for sale on trademe.co.nz but is too new for me. 1HDT and everything!

x2 Its an expensive one as you have to extend the chassis to get a square door in the rear. It could be an import from South Africa as they do theirs this way.

Interior looks like its from a 61 or 62 series

We had 2 of these at work, they had extended chassis with a dualcab body and normal full length tray - both bent in the middle and were known as the "banan boats"

They had a lovely view of the sky as you drove them, pity you couldnt see SFA infront of you...

Its enough for the fridge, some jerry cans, water and your tools . It would still have more room than a 60 or 80 series wagon because you can go higher than the roof

Unusual for sure as the upper hose is still near the bottom. Maybe he had frothing problems that some owners report with their fluid.

I thought if you plan go over 35" tires it's a must run a PS cooler ..

Ram assist = PS cooler and steering stabilizer at once. Best bang for buck mod.

Hi All:

Cool rig!

Bruce, in the photo of the engine compartment it looks like a 1HZ to me. Does the 1HD-T have a similar appearance?

Thanks!

Alan

Yeah, they do look quite similar. The big giveaway is the crossover tube over the valve cover. It turns down on the airbox side of the engine where they both connect to a CT26. That and the word "turbo" in red cast into that same tube.

Now why is it that the Ozzy's and the South African's get all the good stuff? Makes me kinda pissed off.

Who needs air bags? The Fed is trying to turn us into Bubble Boy, or something. You would think that they would know by now that they can't legislate common sense. And saving the morons is destroying the darwinism thing, keeping them around.

I guess we can hope that if you make something idiot proof, then the world makes a "better" idiot.

It looks like the South African conversion done by Meano ( the little triangle between the doors is the give-away) Cost about ZAR 50 000 including giving a dual layer on the loadbox sides. New 70 Pick-up with 4500 petrol cost about ZAR 300 000 to put in perspective. There is no mod to the chassis and the laodbox is smaller, but with some of these fancy Outback drawer systems a fridge, 60 l water, 80 l petrol tools and camping for 4 for 10 days no problem. Large space under the rear seat as well

Cheers

Is that just for the 79 series? It wouldnt work with a 75 as they are just too short.

EDIT I see now why the aussie models have the angled off rear door. They leave a wider pillar between the doors for more leg room in the rear seat and for easier exit/egress

I believe we only one model cahssis here in the pick-up range and that would be the 79. The legroom front and back is more tha adequate for two six foot four models behind each other. The conversion with rear doors and funny windows is unfortunately not the same quality as the original with crcks at the upper end of the pillar between the doors quite common
