Warn Military 9000 wiring questions

I going to mount a Warn Military 9000 winch in the rear of my 80 tomorrow.

What gauge wire would be required?
I thought I read somewhere to always connect the ground wire to the battery.

Or can I ground it to the chassis?

2/0 gauge. Going to be pricey.

Standard wisdom is to run a ground to battery.

However, due to cost, I have been planning on grounding my rear M8 in my 40 to the chassis. I would first tig weld a stainless tapped lug to the chassis at the winch and battery to guarantee a top-notch connection that cannot rust/corrode. If I do that, I have a feeling it would work, though it still may not. We'll see.

Other option is to mount a battery in the rear of the truck and just run a charging wire to it, which could be a smaller gauge.

Military winches are 24v. You might want to check it first.

Either way you are dealing with 1980's winch technology, 140 lbs and slow. Even Hummer guys don't want these things. We removed all of the Warn winches and went to hydraulic mile markers on all of the vehicle in the fleet. about 10,000 for the AF and 130,000 Army, those things are going to be popping up everywhere for nothing. Most were just turned in as scrap but there are hundreds in the supply system that were still brand new in the box that are being sold at auctions everywhere.

Military winches are 24v. You might want to check it first.

The winch was free. Originally I was going to go on the rear of my BJ74.......... but the 74 was sold in favor of another 80.
I put a Warn 9000xi in a TJM winch bumper on the wheeling 80; since the Mil DC 9000 did not fit without a lot of modifications.

So the Mil 9000 will go the rear of the 80.

Yes you are correct the winch was 24V..... now she is 12V, new motor and solenoids. My buddie now has spare parts for his Military 9L DC;p.

The little extra weight in the rear is not going to hurt me nor do I care if the winch is slow.

Yes you are correct the winch was 24V..... now she is 12V, new motor and solenoids. My buddie now has spare parts for his Military 9L DC;p.

can you share the part numbers for the 12v conversion? i have a friend that has one of those mil 9000 winches and i can get it from him for cheap!
