I've been searching for an 8274 winch for the past 4 years. I've got too many dependents to afford a new/slightly used version so I've been trolling ebay and craigslist for local option.
About three weeks ago I spotted a listing on craigslist. I had little hope for it since the listing was already a few weeks old. But I called the guy and left my number. He called back the next day and said he still had the 8274. "It's an older one, but it still ran last year when I last tested it." We discussed it a little more and he kept asking if I'd rather look at the Ramsey 9K that he had since it was a "stronger" winch. I assured him that I was interested in the Warn. He stated he'd have to get it brought in from the "ranch". I asked him to give me a call when he was going out to get the ranch truck so that I could make arrangements to meet him to confirm the 8472 and buy it from him. The original price was to be about $280. He said he'd adjust the price since he did not have the remote cable.

I got a call from him a week ago, Sunday evening. He had brought the truck in from the ranch and had it at a friend's shop. I could come down any time and look at it. My only problem was that he was 90 miles away. I explained that I was up in Austin and could not make it there for a few days. He said he was in no hurry and would wait for a few days for me to get down there.
Called him Friday night to set up a meeting on Saturday. Left a message at his house and on his cell. Saturday night and still not call. Sunday afternoon he finally called. Someone had broken into his friends shop and tried to steal the winch. They had cut the battery cables and torched the bumper off the truck to get at the winch, but they must have been spooked cause they left the bumper and winch on the shop floor. He was going to put it back on craigslist the next day for less money just to get rid of it. Since the cables were cut, he didn't feel right about charging the higher price.
I cleared my afternoon schedule (yes dear, I promise to finish it tomorrow evening), and head down to San Antonio. Got over to the guy's house and finally got to see the winch. It's an older one. I don't have any idea of the production time line, but the Date Code is BF8. The serial number only has 5 digits and the terminal leads to the motor are weather cracked and faded. It looks like the same series that Bill Ansell (BillaVista on Pirate4X4) wrote up his detailed rebuild page. Warn 8274 rebuild
Oh, and the price,.......$160! :bounce:
I GOT IT!!!. The case looks good. Not obvious damage. No signs of leaking (could be dry of oil). The solenoid box looks like it will need some work and I'll have to get a new remote plug (and remote) since both are missing.
No pictures yet. (I have my camera w/ me, but the cable is at home). I'll try and snap some tonight after I get back from taking the boys to Scouts.

VERY COOL! ;) Great Score!

Will that fit on your ARB? I know that pirate Dave on the 3FE list put a 8274 on his ARB, so you might ask him a few questions.

I measured the bolt-holes on the bumper the other day. They match the cleats for the 8274 info on Warn's web site.
I called Warn service department and the guy was very helpful. Kept going on about what to check and what part number to order if said component was bad..... Also gave me a distributor/service center in San Antonio (Schertz actually).

It will take a little time to get it torn down and checked out. The date code expands out to Feb, 6th work day, either '78 or '88.
Considering that the serial number is only 5 digits, it's most likely 1978 production.

Below are a couple of bad pictures as I was taking it off the tailgate this evening.
The rusty spool and brake look like just surface rust. The relays inside the control box look remarkably good for be 20-30 yrs old. The wires to the motor are weather worn on the insulation, but the cables themselves are in quite good condition. If the rest of the parts are in as good of condition as the control box, I'll be quite happy.

Congrats Michael! Looks pretty good. Let us know how it goes when you tear it down.

Oldie but Goodie. Great score. :grinpimp:

Nice Score... That "old" winch will outpull most of the newer and higher rated winches.

Great price, better than the price than he offered me:). He was parting whole rig when I saw it. If it's the same one I remember seeing it came off a hunting vehicle that was rigged to handle 2 wrenches. That dual connecter you see on front of the wrench ran back under the hood to a set of relays.

Michael,

It looks as if we need to have a warn 8274 rebuild party - I scored one today for the FJ40 project, it came with the cable and remote. It works fine..I think it just needs a little TLC and oil.

So what's the date code on yours?
That looks a lot better than the one I picked up.

How'd you score yours?

Here are the numbers:
Part number 8403
Serial number 63199
1D7 - date code?? How do I read that? would that be dec 1 1977??

Craigs list - and when I called the number it turned out to be Rob over at atomic 4x4, and he cut me a deal. ;) Small world....

Had a chance to dig into the winch, it looks as if someone has already overhauled it.

The electrical looks new, and the gears where oily and in good shape. Iam not so sure about the brake and feel spool knob.

Can some one tell he how the brake works?? Maybe I'll run over to Brian's house and look at his.

..

Wow! Yours is older than mine. My serial no. is 79xxx.
The date code was explained as The month of production, the work date of the month, and the last digit of the year.
January, the 4 work day of the month, 1977?

My date code 2E8. I was told that by the serial no. it is most likely 1978.

Now that I have most of the critical events completed, I hope to open my winch to see what condition it is. I know that I have to work on the clutch. It won't disengage at all.

Mike - I spoke with DSI 800-374-8028 the Warn repair center in our area. Good guys and very helpful.

Maybe we should do this upgrade???

Michael,

I just got off the phone with WARN, They are sending me a sticker pack. I ordered two...one for you.
They are free. :bounce:

I also spoke to Hercules wire and rope. They are on I35 and Yegar lane 512-834-9584. They can fix you up with wire or rope and have good prices. 5/16 Galvanized cable is $.50 a foot custom lengths, and they can add a hook...or what ever you need. I used them when I did the winch in the FZJ80. Good folks.

I think Iam going to just put 75 feet on, and then use some extension cables when needed.

Very Cool HawkDriver. Have you seen the posts by Flintknapper https://forum.ih8mud.com/camping-gear-recovery/197470-my-warn-8274-rebuild-part-1-a.html
He has a very good write up on building the lower half. There is also a link to billavista's article on Pirate4x4 for the upper half and more info.
I need to go spray mine again w/ PB Blaster, to get the screws loose enough to pull it apart and the clutch shaft to release.

Mark, thanks for the stickers. I've been meaning to call them, but I haven't even opened the top of my winch.
I saw the giggle pin upgrade. I hope that I don't ever get into anything that would require that much power. I think I will just keep it simple and stock. Did you look at the posts in Flintknappers thread about the 6HP motor from the 9XP winch? That may be as far a I go for additional pull. Nice find w/ Hercules wire. I'll keep them in mind.

I really need to get my front wheel bearings done before I play w/ the winch.:steer:
I've got all the parts for the bearing (and races), but I don't have any garage room to work in, so I have to catch a good weekend that is not already scheduled.

This weekend is already taken. It's the "Survival" camp out w/ the Scouts. It'll be our second son's first camp out as a Boy Scout. I'm not carrying anything of his the weekend. It will be interesting to see if he has paid any attention to the past camping trips we've been on.
