Pics of an F or 2F from too much 21st Century lubrication?
My Nissan 720 had diesel oil for a short time, installed by a pro, despite the cat on the exhaust, and those detergents made the oil opaque-black within 300 miles.

Good to see, I'm not the only advocate for Schaeffer's oil...
It's also in my transmission, transfer case, diffs, steering :), and 238 grease is in my birfs and suspension. Their gear oil is fantastic, and I've seen their hydraulic oil do some great things with problem equipment. The prices are really actually reasonable when you buy the $375? minimum to get the better prices.

I ran Lucas Hot Rod & Classic Car motor oil in my 240Z. It's 2300 ppm ZDDP. I get it from work (O'Reilly), in 5 quart jugs.

For my 3fe, I am using Delo 15w40.

Recently purchased a 1974 FJ40 with an F155 engine. Can't figure out if this is considered a flat tappet engine, and in need of an zddp additive when changing the oil? Plan to change oil for the first time, and need guidance on best oil/ additive combination?
Vavoline ZR1. It is a mineral oil with a high zinc/phosphorus content.

As has been said many many times - Racing oil is just that: Oil that is meant to be used for a short, high-rev'ing period (a race), then drained and replaced. Racing oils have high zddp but do not have the additive pkg (detergents, etc) for DD use or even year-long OCI's.

@74FJ40newbie

Do you see how you created a lubrication worm hole!

There are oil and lubrication worm holes by the hundreds on Mud for every spot on every series of LandCruiser that require an oil or a stiff lubricant. When you have all day, have fun and do a search on the subject.

Although I must admit some new and up to date info was shared on this thread.

Please let us know if this information is helpful and what direction your going to go with your choice of motor oil.

This kind of info is why Mud Rocks!

PS: and if your new to Mud, welcome!

My apologies. If I had known better, I would have steered clear of all things lubrication related. Ended up going with Castrol high milage 10w40 with Lucas Zddp additive. Don't plan to drive much during long restore. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for getting back. How many miles are on the engine now? And let us know how things are at the 1st oil change!

Happy motoring

It's a step up on a tractor motor, not the fuel pumps on the space shuttle. Put 9 quarts of quality oil in it and drive it.
