Water and fuel is freaking heavy and a few jerry cans add up fast. Don't go messing with your axle placement until you figure or test for that weight.

Hi Pat,
The batteries may go right in the front where I have the black battery bo thing sitting in this pic. Not sure orientation. Just in that area somewhere like everyone else does.

Would you be able to add some 1 1/2" tube framework somehow to mount the Yakima bike mounts to over the front? I plan to bend it up and go across the trailer and front to back as well to mount everything on top.

Ideally I'd like the tent pushed to the back, opening off the back like you have it. Then have enough room on the front still to carry mountain bikes. The bike trays are about 52" long so however far off the front that puts the tubing. Just looking it should be just about perfect to have them tie into the front corners of the trailer with vertical supports?

This same 1 1/2" sq. tubing will be used throughout to mount the tent and any other rack type set ups up top. The Yakima 1A towers don't grip the rain gutters well enough so they are going to be toast for the tent. I'll end up making some mounting brackets to attach the tent directly to the 1 1/2" tubing.

My original plan was to try to keep the Yakima towers in place on the tent, and keep the spacing identical to the roof of the 80 so I could easily take the tent off the trailer with my ceiling hoist, then throw it on the truck for those times I'm not bringing the trailer. Those times will probably be rare so I'll just re-mount the Yakima stuff for the truck if the need arises. Not a big deal.

Like I said, this thing is becoming a do-it-all trailer so it may end up I'm trying to tie too much into it. But for now, let's max it out.

Update time kids!!

Anywho....did a bit more....I know it looks a bit boxy but once you decide on a trailer length, we can get a bit more detail..

Have at it......

great looking build fellas. i love the external cage.

i found a "wildernest" camper shell for sale at some guys house and picked it up to see if i could incorporate it the way you have with this design. when i put it on the m416 it looked like a dung beetle. too top heavy. back to my original design then!

Thanks Phulcrum. Pat's doing all the heavy lifting. I'm just an idiot with a couple ideas to get a mess started. :)

If anyone reading this has a desire for a Leer truck cap to incorporate into a trailer, I have one I
ll never get time to build with. May post in the For Sale section when I get back next week.

For now here's a few pics. Supposedly fits a Ford Ranger. I'll get measurements more precise, but 58"x74" outside dimensions. The framework that would normally fit inside the bed rails is quite a bit narrower. The thing is beefy as Hell and comes with all the gas struts, clamps, etc. Looks like brand new. Not even sure if it was ever put on a truck. I bought it when I bought the utility shell I'm using now.

Might be too big for most hardcore users, much like my shell, but for someone maybe it's the ticket. Thanks.

that thing would make a great roof for my trailer, if the dimensions are right.

Make me an offer. :)

Same thought I had after watching so many trailer builds trying to make latches/lift supports/sealing them up, etc. Just such a nice package all ready to go if you just build the rest of the trailer around it, or just make a fitment ring type thing for the top of the 416. Something that welds or bolts to the trailer that transitions to the dimensions of the topper.

Maybe it's just too big for a 416, but for a scratch built trailer seems like a great way to go. Who knows. Good luck either way.

edit: found a couple more pics. Just dusty. Super shiny paint.

could you get a pic of the underside of it? i need to see how strong the frame is.

Will do when I get back next week. Roadtripping with wife and 4 kids to Tulsa. Yeehah.

awesome! did you bring the beginings of the trailer with you?

Wish I would've. :)

Will try to get some measurements for you tonight. Gotta organize that ridiculous mess I've created in the garage.

 Your minivan just thew up all over that parking lot

......and luckily none of it's occupants did during the 2000 miles we put on. :)

Thanks Dave. I do believe you are correct, Sir. Thanks.

Side Note: My sister lives in Austin and I was really tempted to buy your old roof rack the other day and have her store it til someone's coming north. Killing me not to. :)

What the hell is the story with this build?

3 pages of hopes and dreams...lets get cranking here!!

Well, at least it's outside "resting comfortably" now. :flipoff2:

Too many projects started. Not nearly enough finished. I have to finish up my fish house so I can get it out of my garage. Then the trailer will get cracking again.

I'm kind of glad I've been sidetracked a bit on it. Every day I think of(or copy) some new idea to make it better. That's a bad thing too though as I may never actually finish it if I'm afraid to not have everything under the sun incorporated into this thing.

Some day..............some day.....:)

update. getting ready to get back on this project for a little bit.

Ready to go pick up my axle tomorrow. Varying opinions from my local supplier vs ABC Trailer. Told ABC what I was making(3500#, 35" tires, single axle etc). I asked about simply taking the stock length, pre-cambered axle and flipping it over and mounting new spring perches to keep the camber correct as a sprung over. He said unless I planned to have the thing fully loaded all the time, that a "flat" axle would be the way to go.

I need an answer, in 10 words or less, should I be getting a flat/straight axle, or make sure I have it cambered correctly as a sprung over?

Does that makes sense?

Thanks. (Again).

And it looks like I am going to start from scratch with the trailer frame/axle and build up from there. Scrapped the idea of modifying the current trailer. It stays as a leaves hauler and garbage mover for now. :)
