Of all the people on 'Mud, YOU have the audacity to lecture me about the proper way to seek information?

easy, easy...! you did see the smiley, right....? and I said *"we"* depend on Mud (that includes *me*), not *"you"*....

(plus you were asking for it, Mr. "I'll repeat the question"... :) <-------- note new smiley)

This is how threads get derailed, he post then you post then he post.

Trust me I've derailed many threads:grinpimp:

It sounds like you two have history, fine and well, just get it the hell out of my thread.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter. :flipoff2:

Easy there Danny Boy.

Eric and I have known each other for many years before you came around and we'll work things out quite well as we choose. "Your thread" may be where we choose to do it if we want to. Eric and I may not see eye-to-eye on some things but that doesn't stop us from being friends.

Who died and made you Supreme Ruler anyway?

It's my thread because I started it. And I don't really care for the tone it has taken. Work things out as you will "Wolfy Boy" just take it down the street.

I'm good! Beo is a good guy, no worries! I'm about to have breakfast after a weekend in SF including a music festival on the street under a gorgeous blue sky... So all is well and I'm happy. :)

I'm in a good mood, so I won't point out, Mr. Rusty, that my original comment (not so great joke) was supportive of your replies. Ooops, I just did... oh well... :D

Tech content: had a look at the 10R. Not the most elegant design...

Supportive or not there is no need for sniping in tech. That is what Chat is for.:grinpimp:Besides what was there to support? Beowulf ask a valid question, I checked out my link more closely and found that the radio is in fact not available. Question answered, case closed.
As a Mod you should know better.

What do you dislike about the FTM-10R design? I'm really interested in opinions on the radio, good and bad, that is why I started this thread.

I'm looking at this transceiver as well... I like the simple look of it and for the most part I will be staying on one frequency in simplex. I like the idea of not having to have another Microphone bouncing around the truck if the mic on the control panel works. If not I think I will hold out for the Bluetooth option... I hate wires.

Man thats a sweet looking rig, but it looks like your gonna pay for it! $$$$$
Im extremely happy with the 7800 , but not its quite as sexy.

Rusty_

I think u will like this rig. I've been looking at the pdf manual and there is a lot to like. I may use this rig in conjunction with my FT100 system, shown here:

http://homepage.mac.com/dfmorse/RigProj/page1.html

The FT100 has problems with blown VHF/UHF MOSFET's. I can keep the FT100 for low band and use the FTM10R for VHF/UHF.

So far, the reports I have been reading, (I don't own the FTM10R yet) have been very good. There are warnings of using the right tools for dis-assembly. The small screws are really tight. Also, be forewarned about Yaesu manuals; they are somewhat hard to figure out; which is why I like ICOM rigs.

However, like I said, I'm reading the manual as I type this and it appears to be quite good. Like all Yaesu rigs, u will not be able to have a "plug and play" rig, study will be required. Do a lot of study on how and where this rig will be used...

The power connector is special; we will have to figure a better arrangement. Maybe :::

http://www.powerwerx.com/

Although I don't see anything yet on their site.

If this rig fits the ash tray of the FJ80, some kind of fan will be needed for long range heat dissipation.

This rig is going to be a winner...

I have been talking w a guy at the local S'yvale Ham Radio Outlet about the FTM-10R. One of their salesman apparently purchased it and ALL the BT accesories. Their comments indiated that the BT earpc/mic tended to fall off your ear if you rotated your head to quickly and that the audio quality was poor. Looking into that further. Other than that, the salesman seemed to be pleased - I still need to follow up w him.

Also read in the eham.com reviews that the VOX feature is virtually useless: false triggers, etc.

So then got to thinking about going w the new JawBone BT ear pcs for cell phones. Would it marry up to the FTM-10R?? Again, the Ham Radio Outlet indicated that Yeasu had made it difficult/impossible to sync up any other BT earpc but their own. BUT, eham.com reviews indicated that someone had just the opposite experience - they were able to sync up several other BT headsets and earpcs.

I played w the demo unit at HRO, trying out the controls. It's display is small but they built the head to be used as a handheld mic/spkr if you so chose. In other words, its not just a remote face plate but a mic! Nice I suppose for ATV use and maybe in a noisy 40. I like the dual band features - cant recall if it had dual-repeat capability, tho.

While I was looking at the demo unit, one of the frequent customers at HRO stepped over and told me about a device out of the UK called the Talk Safe that is intended to be a generic BT device that, with the correct adaptor, can be attached to most any amateur radio and, I believe, preserve the PTT/VOX features. This would mean I could consider other radios than the FTM-10R and add BT! Or, so it seems. Their US dist is Heil - maker of nice pro audio and ham headphones and mic sets. Heil apparently thinks the audio quality of the Talk Safe mic and earphone is so poor he will not offer it as-is. Instead, they are working on marrying it up to one of their (Heil's) headsets. Not sure which one and he offered no ship dates or price. Did get a note back from Talks Safe (UK), tho, and their unit from the UK will cost around $250, AFAIK. Kindof pricey but in line with the $'s spent to equip the FTM-10R with all the BT bits and pcs.

That's another thing - watch the $$ creep on the accessories! Tho, I do like how you can place the BT earpc in the little receptacle(s) on the face plate for re-charge.

I liked the ruggedness, small detachable face plate and BT features and still plan to go this way. I just want to make sure the BT stuff will work well and not just end up in the center console! I have learned a lot about the need for good ear and mic quality for decent transmission so it may pay to keep asking around- especially the VOX feature. I have my doubts that without a quiet envorment and/or good noise-cancelling ability in the BT headset/ear pc, that the VOX feature may be useless to me inside the 80 with windows down during a trail run.

Phil,

Interesting comments on the FTM-10R. Right before Xmas I was debating between it and the FT-7800. I decided to go for the 7800 and placed an order with Hamcity.com.They had the best price around and pretty good service from previous experiences.

Xmas came and past and my radio had not arrived. I contacted HamCity and I was told that the 7800s were in back order and should be there by the end of the week. That came and past and contacted them again, still backordered.

Jan 9th came. And I was a little upset that my radio had not arrived, so I contacted them again and asked if they had the FT-8800 in stock. They sure did. So I paid for the difference and later that day I got a tracking number. My radio should be here tomorrow.

The nice thing about the FT-8800 is that is a true dual bander. And it can work as a cross band band repeater.

Regards

Alvaro

Alvaro,
I was thinking of the FTM-10R for my FJ40. As you know it isn't always the friendliest environment inside Ol' Rusty.

It will be interesting to see how the FT-8800 works out. Is this for the Taco?

Dan

Rusty Dan--Just put a cheap FT2800 in your 40. Then if it gets stolen or mangled, you're only out $100 or so.

If you get a nice radio, put that in your "nice" truck.

Since I started this thread I purchased the VX-7R HT with a mag mount antenna and speaker mic. So far it has been working out pretty well. I only use it on the trail and it's range is fine for that. It's not like I can do a lot of chatting when I'm on the highway in the 40.

As it stands I think I need a tire rack for the 40 more than anything else. I'm lusting after the 4+ dual rack that MAF sells, cha ching $$$$$$.

So I may wind up getting a cheap radio for the "nice" truck.

Dan,

The FT-2800 will go to the Taco, while the FT-8800 will go to La Cabra.
I'd think you'd do fine with a FT-2800 on your 40. Install it so it's easy to remove. That way if it's pouring, you can put it away on a bag.

Regards

Alvaro
