Do you really need one or is it just easier to do with a pc?

I think it's pretty hard to beat the FTB7800 software:

and it's a fair bit cheaper than Yaesu's setup (which I'm not familiar with)

It's way faster to do with a computer; whether or not it's worth the expense of the cable & etc. depends on how many repeaters you're going to input and how often you change them. It's not difficult to input them manually, just tedious if you're doing very many.

I like the ARRL "TravelPlus for Repeaters" software that will find and export a list of all the repeaters along/near any route you choose.
