I will level with who ever reads this.. I have no idea if it is a "split" case or not...I didn't know there were more than one transfer cases available, but mine has a bum bearing in it and I would rather replace it with a good used one. Any help is appreciated!!

Your FJ60 will have a split case on it.....

So, you will need to tear your current case apart to remove it, as that is how they are installed on the truck....and your 'new' transfer case will need to be tore down to be installed....

So,

Purchase aa bearing kit and a gasket kit and be done with it.

You are not going to be able to purchase a complete 'bolt on, easy swap' unit, as these cases are not designed the same as the 'one-piece' earlier Land Cruiser transfer case, which, will not work in place of your split case.

Good luck!

Xfer case

So the 60 is the same as a 62 then? Will I need to haul this case to a machine shop to press the bearings into it, or can this be done in my garage?
Thanks again for the info!

You could do it in the driveway if you had to .Not really that hard.Buy some beer for a more experienced mechanical buddy and get a Factory service manual.Should only take a few hours.Good Luck.

I appreciate your helping out...I am fairly experienced working on trucks for the most part, but I have not had this 62' very long and did not realize the case had to come apart to get it off of the transmission. So long as I don't need a press to install/remove bearings I should be good to go. I will however take your advice and splurge on the Toyota factory manual instead of relying on my Chiltons. Thanks again!

You do need a press to press off and on the bearings. Or you can use some "other" methods that don't require a press. I tend not to use those other methods while working on my Cruisers, so I took my shaft to a machine shop just for the press work. There may be some ghetto way of doing it, and I am sure somebody will post it, but a press is your best bet.

Also, inspect the main drive gear in the t-case (the one located on the output shaft of the tranny) and the output shaft of the tranny. The splines should be rounded on the shaft and the inside of the gear. Many times a vibration develops because the gear and tranny output shaft have overly warn splines. If the splines are sharp on the gear and the shaft then you should replace the gear with a McNamara gear before you break the remaining splines. Or rebuild the tranny and replace the shaft and gear.

And don't forget to replace the o-ring between the tranny and the case to avoid ATF from getting into the case. $1 part requiring much labor to fix if you don't do it now.

I sure appreciate everyones help. I intend to buy a small parts kit with all the bearings and seals already in it. It is something like $200 and should have it all I guess. I suppose I will replace that gear on an 'as needed basis'. I REALLY appreciate all the help. I don't want to pay anyone to do this for me if I can help it.
Cheers to all of you!!
