Would you consider a 2008 with 200k mi for the right price?

I found a 2008 with 200k on the clock with front and rear ARB bumpers and an OME lift for $22,500. It seems like a lot of truck for the money but how much life is left in the motor?
Thx!

Can't say what the life on a motor unless you take it to a shop to get a leakdown and check the smoothness of the motor.

If you can get a full list of records of what has been done than that might help as well. If nothing has been done, expect the following.

1. alternator
2. starter
3. coil packs
4. water pump
5. injectors to be cleaned

also check if the diffs, tran and transfer case had the fluids changed. if not that needs to be changed.

Check brake fluid to see if it's black. Most people never change the brake fluid. It's suppose to be changed every 2 years.

Radiator to be checked for a crack. There is a post about the radiator

off the top of my head those are the items.

Good list... but pull the timing belt off the list. the 5.7 uses a timing chain. Add the water pump to the list if the original has made it this long.

There are examples of the motor lasting well beyond 200k. It's a lot of miles for a 22k truck, but you could probably drive it for another couple hundred k if it's in good shape and you are OK with the possibility of changing out the "list". I'd also be more interested in where the 200k were driven. arizona or utah or any other dry salt free area vs. the NE would have a big say in whether I was interested.

I tend to think about how many miles it has left for what i pay, rather than how many it already "used."

For another $17.5k my 2008 offered me 152,000 unused miles. To me, $22k is WAY too much considering the huge number of miles that are already ""taken" from you. Would you be willing to pay $17.5k for an "extra" 152,000 miles? I think most would be. I think you can do significantly better.

If memory serves, I could swear that someone just bought a similar unit for $22k that had only 120k miles... Deals are out there.

**EDIT!!**
I looked up your truck ad, and wow. There are a LOT more mods! See my post lower down...

$22k will get you a very clean, and low mileage 100 Series...

OK...
You didn't tell us enough about this truck!
When I posted earlier, I had no idea that it has around $15,000 worth of quality mods!
-----------
**EDIT** I revised to $9k worth of mods. SEE MESSAGE BELOW.

That's like paying $7k for the truck if you were to pay for those mods yourself.

I just looked at AutoTrader.com...and **if it's the Cruiser I saw there?*

This is a serious list of added goodies...

It includes:
ARB front bull bar...
ARB Rear bumper
Old Man Emu suspension
Roof Rack
Lights both front and rear
Warn 9000lb winch
Rear lights
Hi-Lift Jack
ARB Compressor
!!

These goodies change the buy from MEH... to WOW

Here's why...

Here's the listing:

go to the Toyota website and get the full maintenance history: Track Your Service Records with Your Toyota Owners Account
the engine/transmission are the same as the Tundra that have been documented going to 1,000,000 miles.
That being said, at 200K, assume you will need to do the following if they have not been done:
water pump, starter, radiator, spark plugs.
Can you do the work yourself? will you be taking it to a shop.
doing the work yourself, expect 1400 in parts. probably close to 4000 for a shop to do all the work.

all depends on previous owner.
also, there are no pictures of the interior. has the truck been a total weekend warrior, is the leather worn out, carpets stained, little electrical switches crusted with dirt/food or broken.

with a responsible owner, complete service records, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 200 series with 200k. Mine is at 165 and drives like a dream.
is 22k pushing your budget. will you be comfortable putting 3-4K into repairs to make sure you can get another 100K miles out of it?

I'm at 180k on mine. Wouldn't hesitate with all that stuff if the truck checked out well.

from the looks of the truck, the guy must have taken good care of it. If he is willing to spend $2500+ for bumpers and the other assortment of mods, he's more than likely wanting to go out to areas that breaking down would be an issue.

I wouldn't hesitate on buying it or it'll be sold to the next guy.

Owner posted more pictures to include interior and under hood. Not really what you want to see IMO. Wires are a little too unkept and the interior looks like it has 200k on it. Plus they didn't bother to clean it out, which means laziness.

I dont see 15K in parts, but I'd still say its a decent deal with a decent amount of risk included.

You're right.
I was thinking wheels/tires + a couple items in my head that weren't there.

BUT... It's easy to get to $9000 in mods...which means about $13k for the truck plus mods (if you had them added).

Here's how i arrive +/- $9k in mods:

$2200ARB front bull bar...$4-500 install

$1900 ARB Rear bumper $4-500 install

$1700 Old Man Emu suspension $600 install

$1200 Roof Rack...$200 install

$800 Lights $100 Install front

$1200 Warn 9000lb winch...$100 install

**Rear lights (Subtracting assumed cost of rear because I don't see any in the photos)

$100 Hi-Lift Jack

$300 ARB Compressor $200 bracket & install

I'm going to have it checked out, make an offer. :)

Personally, I think 200k is 50% life. My 2009 with 130k miles drives like its brand new. No one has guessed that the car has more than 60k miles. Most guess closer to 30k.

Agree.

A few months ago, I came out of a store to find a whole truckload of guys crowded near my newly-washed cruiser in a parking lot, talking about it...

When I walked up and they realized it was mine...they immediately wanted to know what it was...and if I'd somehow gotten ahold of a new model no one had seen yet. When I told them it was a 2008, they literally couldn't believe it. I'm sure my new sliders, clean tires and RW wheels...and super CLEAN truck added to their impression...BUT...we're talking about a Cruiser that was built in 2007...coming up on NINE years old! They thought is was BRAND NEW!

I love this thing, and if we take decent care of their internals...
...they will be around for a very laaaaaaarge chunk of miles. :)

Well, market varies by locale. Friend sold his for 10,800 with 196k 2009.

Had been talking to him since Friday and flew out this morning and am passing.

Guy is super nice and mechanically it seems and drove sound.

Has some hail damage on roof, quarters and side roof strips. Minor but still there. Rear passenger quarter panel is badly scraped and multiple small dent and paint missing. Tailgate has paint worn off where it contacts the bumper on both sides. Like two 10" sections. Front passenger fender has a dent. Rear passenger door scraped quite a bit but may be buffable but again some paint chips. Driver side is prett good. Couple small dings here and there. Interior is reasonably worn but mostly in back seats and hatch area. Panels on rear of front seats both torn. Back of second row seats have damage and third row seats looked rough folded, did not put them down. Headliner a little dirty and leather need some serious cleaning. Small tear on lower side cusion by seat switches.
Airbag light was on as well as tpms.
No wrecks from what I saw and I have a car fax I can forward if anyone is really interested. Shock bodies were all showing rust but undercarriage was clean.

Nice rig if u just want something to beat on and looks good from 10 feet away but it would have cost a lot to get it back into the shape I was expecting.
