Hello Mud,

I'm new. I've read a bunch here, like fixing things, and like doing as much of my own mechanical work as possible. I tend to ramble a bit. I acquired my '93 fzj80 about a year ago.
His name is Sammy. I found him in pretty decent shape for 303,000 miles. Here's a pic:

Yes, 303,000 miles. Sure, it's not the end of his life, but it definitely made the initial cost much more palatable. I've already spent more than my starting price on various repairs. I really love the beefiness of this rig. I would love to baseline it, but I don't have the disposable income required to do one of those amazingly beautiful rebuilds from the ground up. (Hence "PoorBoy") Thankfully, I drive a company vehicle for work, which gives me some flexibility on how deep I can go with my repairs.

Initial conditions: 303,000 highway miles, green coolant, clicky birfs, rusty exhaust, little oil leaks, slight slip between 2nd & 3rd, broken parking brake cable, slow windows, and wimpy A/C. One dent on the top of the rear hatch and a rusty front trim piece thing under the grill and above the bumper. Mostly stock.

Completed projects: Radiator replacement, PHH & coolant replacement; valve cover gasket, spark plugs, plug wires, & distributor cap; reman transmission; Parking brake cable replacement; one window run replacement. I probably forgot to mention something.

Future projects: Birfs, air intake hose, oil pump seal, more window runs, suspension, tires, winch & bumpers, paint job, and a sleeping platform. Lockers, lighting, and remote start would be cool, but who knows if I'll ever get there.

Intended use: General go-everywhere adventuremobile. The wife and I like camping, hiking, skiing, and other outdoorsy adventures. This will mostly be a hobby and tool to get us to some cool places.

Did I mention that I tend to ramble a bit?

Welcome to the Mudness!
Truck looks great and plenty of life left. Take care of him and he’ll return the favor. But about that poor part..... it’s true, but worth it.

Welcome!

Now drive it for a while to figure out what it really needs.

Set up a priority list.

U drove mine for a year and 25K miles before jumping in with full baseline. When I got it, it needed brakes, birfs, tires, cooling system rebuild, front and rear axle rebuild.

I drove it until I felt I had gathered.parts, then the radiator blew up and forced my hand. So I parked it in the garage and went to work on it for three very heavy weekends. Did all the list above at one time. Made it a new truck and is my DD with 294K on it. I bought it with 196.

If you are doing the rad and phh it’s just as well you replace all coolant hoses while it’s drained, it won’t cost that much and at 333,000 miles they are due if the have not been done.

I'd start with that transmission issue. Determine if it will be costly (rebuild) or "simple" (solenoids n such)to fix. Apart from an engine refresh, it's generally the next most expensive thing to sort, yet its functionality (or lack thereof) can absolutely leave you stranded.
