Wobbly Crank Pulley Surprise

I'm rather puzzled about the tight fit because I assumed wear (from the loose pulley moving/knocking on the shaft) would have provided almost a "clearance fit" . (Hence my recommendation for using 660 on all mating surfaces).

:hhmm: I hope that burrs or rust on the mating surfaces weren't responsible for the tightness (because if present, they should have been removed first).

:frown: And hopefully you used a soft-headed hammer with moderate blows rather than steel-on-steel with heavy blows.

And I would have preferred to see it run true before final assembly..

Oh well........ Fingers crossed.

(If either a burr or "a high key" was the cause of the tightness unfortunately it's unlikely to run true.)

I removed all off the burrs and had everything nice and clean before assembly. My dead blow hammer wouldn't budge it and had to resort to the metal/metal contact which I was a bit weary of. I figure this "repair" is either going to work or not at all and then I will probably look at other options for an engine or replacing the crank. Even if it's close to true it will be better than it was.

When I inspected the old pulley there was no way it was fully seated, wobbling as bad as it was caused the bore of the pulley to ovalize, and then the nut was worn so much I couldn't believe it when I received the replacement. Regardless this thing was messed up.

Edit: there was a small blemish on the keyway, I bet that is what caused it to be so tight. :(

Good news, started it up today and it seemed to run almost perfectly true, I wouldn't have expected it to be any better. Time to get the belt back on, put the radiator in, and go for a drive. Thanks for the all of your help and if I am ever in New Zealand I will buy you a beer!
