I am currently fixing up a 77 fj55. Motor for the tailgate only works when i hard wire it to the battery. plus my key will not turn the outside switch, toggle switch in dash is reading the right voltage. Ive been scratching my head for a week. Any suggestions? Especially on the wiring?

I had the same problem. My wires were damaged where it came into the tailgate. The spot where the wires bend. All four were starting to break and one was totally broken. Made me scratch my head for a week before I got fed up and ripped the wires out. I was reading voltages when the tailgate was down and when I would shut it the wires would separate. Works like a charm now. Hope that helps.

check the connections at the junction block inside the tailgate

Yup, also the little safety plunger-button-type switch on the left side of the tailgate frame, it's supposed to supply the ground only if the tailgate is up and closing that switch.

hey if anyone knows where i can locate a good wiring diagram for that i would appreciate it. Seems like all the ones i see cost money and or are for the 40 series. I have a Chilton manual but it gives no wiring info on the tailgate. or i am just a novice nincumpoop.

All your tips have been helpful. Im waiting on my electrical book (toyota) to arrive. Then we are going into surgery. Definately going to try and bypass the key switch. I have an extra remote switch compliments of S.O.R.
Thanks
