Today I finally picked up a wire wheel for my 6" bench grinder, upon installing it and turning it on I noticed the brushes hit the guard which stops it from spinning. Is there a method to fix this? I'd prefer to keep the guards in place as well.

Look into 3M™ Radial Bristle Disc, 6". They come in different grits/colors and have no flying wire bits.

I'll have to look at those wire wheels. The problem with this one is the wires stick to far out the side and hit the gaurd when it tries to spin.

They're not wire wheels as such, but rather plastic with embedded bits of steel that work like a mofo. Each 'disc' is about 2-3 mm and you stack them as wide as you want on your grinder. I think it'll be a better fit as you can custom fit the width nd there's no side stuff sticking out. I have them in 1" for my dremel, 3" for my die grinder, and 6" for my bench grinder. (brown 36/green 50/yellow 80).
