greetings once again everyone,

ive been working on the old man's FJ40 for some time now trying to get it back on the road, and the rats nest is giveing me a run for my money, i was tempted to take it to an auto-electrician but i dont have $1500.00+(AUD) to spend.

what i am after is wiring colours and their respective functions (eg Gy=ground, GR=positive from fuse, ect) as well as any other information your willing to part with. ive gotten through most of it, i just need

wiper switch
fan switch
hazard lights (emergency lights)
headlight switch

the rest of it i can work out on my own its just these that are giving me a headaque.

Try the electrical section of the technical links. There are a few diagrams there that may be helpful.

You might try putting the year of your truck in your sig line, so we don't have to guess. Sometimes it makes a difference.

As a newbie, you might want to try to answer some of your questions before asking for help here. Some folks get kinda edgy when a newbie wants to get spoonfed information. The Search , FAQ and Technical links are very valuable.
Just a word of advice if you dont want to get your s*** jumped by everyone on this forum. :)

i have searched before and have failed. ive downloaded two diffrent wireing diagrams, a 1971mdl and a 1978mdl and niether have been of much help

although i do realy apriciate your kindness about not flameing me and warning me of the members getting upset for spoonfeeding requests, so thanks for the head-up Colorado Boy-74-FJ40.

ive tried quite a few search strings such as "wire" "electric" "electrical" ect, in the search and FAQ search and other sites like google andhave thus far yielded nothing, even if noone is too keen on "spoonfeeding" me the information i am quite satisfied on anyone willing to point me in the right direction, mabey even better suguestions for searching as my searching skills are apparently severely lacking. so i do apologise to anyoni i may have upset bu asking such "noob" questions, but im just trying to get m car back on the road and am not here to upset anyone.

Don't sweat it dude. All is well, As long as you start your message that you have exhausted your resources, then there is no problem. I did that very thing today asking about timing marks on the flywheel. Just be humble and it will go a long way.:)

corsair23: thanks for the link, i have printed that off, along with a 71 model diagram i believe without much success so far.

Colorado Boy-74-FJ40: thanks for the reassurance, much apriciated and if i was offensive, know-all or whatever other kind of vibe i may have been giveing off i do apologise, us australians are quite a bit more casual and lack a little humble-ness i guess.

i think what my major problem is with the switches themselves, such as the wiper switch: what i did was located it, assessed what wires where comeing out of it and started seeing what each wire's output was with a test light and battery. i believed the switch was dead so i tossed it aside and wired up the wipers with a 3 stage switch although they no-longer go to the "park position" or rest at the bottom. this is how i have been tackleing all of the wireing thus far in the whole car because the previous owner turned the rat's nest into......something worse then a rat i guess and the whole project is getting too overwhelming to do at once, so ive removed most of the wires and started from there, lableing everything i can. but my problem here is im not sure how to hook up the favtory switches to get the components to function properly, such as parking the wipers at the bottom of the windscreen. wich is why i was asking for the wire colour and the purpose of each colour. and i do apriciate everyone's input thus far and im sorry if this is begging for spoon feeding but this is the only resourse i have left to ask as i have searched for many hours in google, spent many more hours with a test light and multi-meter and used two diffrent wiring diagrams, all to no avail as of yet and i am under a deadline for around the 15th of october plus or minus a couple of days.

Another Aussie newby here,

I'm just in the middle of fitting a 'painless' kit to my FJ40 and i also have done every search known to man, to find a diagram that is similar to my wiring and have had no luck! I'm stuck on the switches too but thankfully, my old man is a bit of an electrical whiz, so if you still need help with the switch wiring, reply back with the specifics and i'll try to help out.

hi everyone,

ive almost completed the wiring appart from two things and i would like a little advice, i have 3 diffrent wiring diagrams and have googled around but havent got any luck on answering my questions so here i am again.

problem 1: wipers
the windscreen wipers are done appart from one thing, they do not return to the bottom of the windscreen when i turn them off, they just stay whereever they where when i turn it off, there are 4 wires on the back of the motor,
solid blue, blue/red-stripe, blue/black-stripe and blue/white-stripe

problem 2: fuel gauge
all of the wiring diagrams i have only have one wire on the fuel gauge but mine has two...yellow/red-stripe white/black-stripe

can anyone tell me what these wires are supposed to be? such as blue=ground? ive searched high and low and even purchaced a manual but i can-not get it right any assistance would be greatly apriciated, thanks

The yellow red is the sender for the tank .The black white goes to ground (under one of the mounting screws. The wipers have a cam driven switch inside the motor cover . trace the wires to the source and then clean the contacts .

I was stuck on the wiper thing just this weekend! I'll have a look when i get home and write back tomorrow, i'm on LPG and redesigned my instrument cluster, so i'm not using the fuel gauge but i'll have a look anyway.

oh sorry i neglected to mention that im not useing a stock switch, so i need to know what each wire does. although do the 1975 models even have the return function? its all stock from 1975, australian import

thanks so much for the assistance its much apriciated! and if you get stuck with anything i might be able to help ya out DeanDavs

i know this is wildly offtopic here but how do you go for tyre clearance under articulation and suspension compression? i have some old 33*12.5*R15's lying around im hoping they will fit after i get the springs mounted on the top of the axel rather then under

As far as i can tell, this is what each wire does:

Blue/Black = Low Speed
Blue/Yellow = Washer pump
Blue/Red = High Speed
Blue = Power (comes to the switch from the fuse box)
A Ground Wire

The only problem being is that you will be left with a Blue/White wire and i have no idea what that does!!! So if anyone else knows, feel free to let the both of us know!

The Petrol Gauge wire colours are:

Yellow/Red = From Gauge to Fuel Sender
Black/Red = From Gauge to Power (Fuse Box)
And an Earth off the Fuel Sender

I hope that helps.

im pretty sure there is a constant power source somewhere for the wipers, bacause they need to park when turned off, before i ripped appart the loom there was constant power going to the wiper motor, but they where stationary, but then again the FJ diddnt even turn off when you turned the key when i started! thanks again, Dean Davs

ill have to look again but i dont think i have a black/red wire, ill have to take a look, mabey remove the sender and tinker around that way, im a little hesatant about putting 12 volts through the tank when im not 100% sure of what im doing, my face might not be pretty but i like where everything is hahahahahahaha

dfmorse gave me this little jem a little wile ago for the gauge cluster pinout
the meter+ and meter- are the ones for the fuel gauge, so thats it appart from the wipers, and if thats my biggest worry im laughing! thanks for all the help everyone, and i hope the painless wiring realy is painless for ya Dean, good luck mate
