Winter trip

Just got back from a week in the east kootenays. Got down to -18 already. The area would be good for winter camping but a bit far for you.

Wolves almost everywhere in the province now. Howl and you might get a response, as you say they are very social. It's how we called out the pack onto the frozen lake at nahatlatch.

sometimes a single howl indicates a lone wolf. they will come but not to socialize but to kill it. LOL.

Hehe, as long as you are prepared to deal with the consequences But we don't get a lot of wolf attacks in BC (on people).

-18 already? how much snow? I do want to go to the Kootenays but during the summer, there are some amazing peaks to check out over there and lots of trails. That will be a 2-3 week trip in the upcoming years.

That was with the cold snap that came in on the 9th. Snowed about 4" over a couple days. Stayed cold with overnight lows to around -15 for days after. Gets cold in that rocky mtn trench area. Not so bad closer to home though.
Lots to see in the kootenays but I agree winter may not be the best time for it.

it would be my dream come true to have a pack chase me. or better yet i will be chasing them.

i'v been very lucky this fall. almost seen every sort of game including goats and elk localy. even know where and adult grizz lives. came very close to run into him three weeks ago. should have seen the big fresh s*** pile.

anyway how much snow can you navigate through??? there may be two feet of fresh snow by the end of weekend up elaho valley.

No idea, never had this truck in the snow so no clue how it will perform. I've got 33" BFG A/T, LSD front and rear and 4 V-bar chains. I should be able to get myself into enough trouble ....question is how long it will take me to get back out

i did not realize toyota ever offered a limited slip differential in their trucks. they offer a torsion diff in the later supra's but thats not anything close.

That's why it's "sort of". They offered it in some later (3rd gen) trucks and 4runners but as far as I remember never in both the front and rear. They offered the e-locker for the front and rear in 3rd gen units.
The Toyota Supra on the other hand had a Toyota 7.5" diff in their early units with an optional LSD, and an 8" diff in their late 80s models with an optional LSD. The 7.5" is a straight bolt on (or slide in as is the case with the 7.5") that just requires different shims and a little housing grinding. The 8" requires the bearings to be mismatched, one from the Supra, one from the truck. So now I have LSD diffs front and rear for a total cost of $100 a diff and some labour. Way nicer on road manners and it helps off-road. So technically I can say I have factory Toyota LSD diffs ....just from a different model.

Do you know any figures on the wolf population in BC? I would love to observe a pack hunt. They are very intelligent and social creatures with a very interesting social structure. With any luck I'll get a chance to use the 500mm lens and get some nice shots that way ...I'll still bring the .308 though just in case...

I'm not sure on numbers but assuming it is very big up here in north eastern BC, they are doing a number on the moose and caribou up here. My dad, brother , and I watched a pack hunt while we were out hunting up here about 4 years ago they were running up and around a young moose, who was just running for his life down a seismic line as we watched from across the valley. And the colours of all the wolves was incredible, from black, grey, brown, to one that was golden on the brest and red on the back. It was pretty neat to see, and they howled every night we were there. Between the wolves and all the hunters taking the moose out, we used to see at least 30 moose the two weeks he was up hunting to now the last year when they only really saw one or two.

I love the way wolves work . You can be sure down here that the grizz and wolverine are all on the same loop. Valley to valley. I've never seen wolves up the squamish. I have heard they will drop into the valley up at 70 mile from meager upper pemberton. I think they run the Callahan garibaldi pit Harrison nalahatch on a regular basis in abundance though. I think with all the elk being introduced into all these areas your seeing a totally new breed of hunting practices of all the predetors coming from afar and following. With the snow in the mountains and fish in the rivers and trees loosing foliage its a pretty prime time for easy low valley viewing.

As much as the increase in the wolf population is bad news for moose and deer, hopefully it's good news for me and wildlife photography. Regrettably the trip is postponed for now. Something came up and I should be able to head out after January 3rd. Rob is already going to be at work so unless someone else jumps in, I'll be heading out solo after that. For now, not sure on the dates just yet.

The last two years a pack has also established itself around Sunday Summit to the Whipsaw. I have seen them on the road the last two winters. They know roads kills are easy pickings.

the weather looks exeptional. might head out tomorow and stay for the night and hopefully check out some wolfs and other creatures.
