I am trying to install a windshield in a '73 fj40. I have read every post. I have read the tech link. I cannot get the weather strip on the winshield. How tight should it be? My wife and I have been trying for an hour. I thought the weather stripping should be tight but it is so tight that it pulls off of one side while trying to set the other side. It just won't stay on. I think I have all of the correct part numbers. I thought the hard part was going to be putting it into the frame. The part numbers are:
windshield - 56111-90800
weatherstrip - 56121-60011
weatherstrip key - 56122-60011

The windshield seems to be the right size because I held it up to the frame and it is just slightly smaller than the lip the weatherstip seats on.

What do you all think?

Might help to heat it for 5-10 minutes in hot water (hottest tap water, no hotter). Dish soap helps to make things slide easy (especially when you go to install the glass/gasket into the frame.

Just realized that I didn't specify "heat the weatherstrip". Don't try to heat the glass. :^)

Spotcruiser nailed it....heat and soap make glass and weatherstrip work easier...

If that does not get it...PM Texican....when he gets back from the 'roundup..he will walk you through it...he likes playing with glass.

3 hours later - my fingers hurt - That was a bitch, and I haven't even installed it in the cruiser yet. But got the gasket on and key installed. I guess that is why Toyota moved to a keyless weather strip in '75.

Spray silicone works great for lubing the glass plus weatherstrip into the frame...

I tried to do a windshield once then I found a glass shop that would do the job for 40 bucks, I'll never try that one again.

Put some sort of cord into the rubber weathershrip groove. Set the weatherstrip onto the frame and slowely pull the cord out while pressing the weatherstrip and cord into the channel. Like the others said, things should go a lot easier if you use a warm seal and dish soap.

You'll get it; it just takes determination.

I used a spray bottle of soapy water and a plastic bondo spreader... Worked great, just kept spraying and working the seal over the glass with the spreader. The key was a PITA and took longer than the windshield.

Lay a 1/4 inch cord (laundry line rope) in the rubber channel and as you press on the window pull the cord out. It will "pry" the seal out as you pull the rope out while you press the glass in place. Soft soapy pliable rubber makes it go better.

Wait, you have the seal on the glass with the key installed, but not in the frame? You should put the seal on the frame, install the glass, then the key goes last.. Make sure your new glass is the same size as your old glass. I bought a new glass from Toyota, and it was more then an inch longer then the one I took out.. Had to take it to the glass shop and get it cut.

I had the same thing happen. Toyota has the newer style windshield still avalable (wipers on bottom) which is about an inch wider than the old style windshields but has them listed as the windshield for the 74. I ordered 2 to make sure it wasn't miss labled but the were both wrong. I liked the windshield because it was tinted and said Toyota in the corner but it was $180 plus the cost of cutting. I got a glass shop to cut the the whole windshield for $75.

broke the windshield installing it.......now that I look at it it was too long by about an inch. I guess I am starting over. I will probobly take it to a glass shop.

Oh man, that sucks... Sorry to hear that...

If you have your original windshield take it to the glass shop for a template.

Toyota no longer has the old style windshields even though they will show them the system they are all newer style ones (one inch wider)

I would bitch to your dealer that they gave you the wrong one and it broke... who knows they might feel sorry for you :)

I took mine back after trying to install it and even with the box ripped open they gave me a refund.
