can someone tell me what a good winch weight for a mostly stock 84 pickup is? I am looking at a WARN 8000.

Typical answer is that a minimum would be 1.5x the vehicle weight up to 2x the vehicle weight depending on what sort of use it will see. Easy trails, you could possibly drop to 1x the vehicle weight. But if you see a fair amount of rocks, snow, or mud then go towards the 2x end.
Also, with a snatch block you can double the capacity of the winch at the expense of line speed. Something to consider if the majority of your use is fairly easy but you want to be prepared for those 1% times that you need more.

8K will be plenty enough.
ive had good luck with the smittybuilt 8000, and its less than $400
8k is, in my opinion, perfect for a mini truck. You will be happy with the M8000. I am going to plop one of the Smittybuilt XRC8000's on mine when I get my bumper finished up.
The M8000 is a perfect winch for a stock mini.

thanks all. i had a warn 9k on my fj60 and used it a bunch pulling myself and others out of the ms mud. drowned it once and had to replace the motor. waterproofed it in the rebuild.
