Wimpy sounding horn

Contrary to many other listers, my horn worked well until a couple of days ago. It now emits a wimpy peep when I blow it. Is there an adjustment on the horn or is it time for a new one or maybe one is a high tone and one is a low tone and the low tone is busted?

I'm in Central America and a good horn is a necessity.

I've got the same problem and would love to remedy it. I'd like to have the stock sound again(like the Roadrunner cartoon). I'd fix 'em if I could, or buy good used ones.

Cruisers actually have two horns, at least my FJ62 and FJ55 both do. One's a high tone the other's a low tone. Changes are that one of them is on the fritz.

My horns, when directly connected to 12v are very clear and loud. The buttons do nothing. There are two suspects:
The contact thingy thats in the steering column that allows the buttons to work when despite wheel spin.
The horn relay, which I believe is the small box normally near the ign. coil on the PS. (At least my truck.)

Check and clean contacts! Likely wimpy voltage.

There are no relays for the horns in a FJ62. The only switch is the normally open contact of the steering wheel

My friend borrowed my cruiser one day, when he returned it he had bought me a set of Hella horns. His statement to me was that a truck this big shouldn't have such a wimpy horn.

I fixed this once. You have to take your steering wheel off and clean/sand the contacter and surface area. It might need to be replaced. It's probably not your horns but the contacter at the steering wheel coroaded and dirty.

also, if the horns aren't pointed in the same direction they don't work

mine started gurgling and i checked it out under the hood. one had loosened and the bell was pointing down. i moved it back up to level with the other and it did just fine.

i guess it has to do with the constructive interference of the two sound waves, but that is probably just something i made up....

Probably has more to do with the loose horn not grounding well because it was loose.....

But thats something I just made up too

Buy a diff set. Mine stopped workin in my 40 and i cleaned up the contact and took a rubber mallet to the horns and they work now but, i want a diff sound. I have an old musical horn like the one in the general lee from the dukes of hazzard. I think its going in the cruiser.

actaully the older(60's vintage) horns have adjustments like points on a dizzy.

want some nice sounding horns? try to find a set of early(not sure when, but mid 60's) fj40/5 horns. they are pretty big so they might not be easy to fit.......but boy to thry sound good, they are trumpet style

to test the horn, just put 12volts to it and check the ground, if the horn works its something else......

My BJ60 has two horns. The passenger side one is the high note and was working, the drivers side is the low note and was not working. I pulled the horn off and there is a small Phillips head screw on the back side which I backed out about 1/2 turn and the horn now works as before.

ummm I had no idea the newer (like a bj60) horn had an adjustment................so no I really didn't get it right............just got lucky
