will the 80 ARB winch bumper shipping box fit inside an 80?

an ARB front bumper will fit in the cargo are of an 80. I (with some help) crammed a non-winch version in the back of my 80 yesterday.

I thought about loading it on the roof...but that sucker's quite heavy and unwieldy. And...getting it up there is only half the battle...you'll need to get the sucker OFF of there without busting something along the way.

eric -- use your tent trailer. The weight shouldn't be enough to damage the top -- it's only 70-ish pounds for the bumper itself... Some pads to cushion it...strap it down... you SHOULD be okay...

Or...just spend the $20 and rent a utility trailer for the day...
:D

When I picked up mine at MAF it was in it's shrink wrap - not a box. Fit that way with PS 2nd row seat forward.

Why do you NEED to keep it in it's box Eric. Plan on returning it? hehehe

I do have a utility trailer actually, but would rather not use it that day

When I bought mine, I literally slipped it on and put 8 bolts in in under 20 mins. Granted it was already out of the packaging(used), but it was VERY easy. I did already have the stock bumper off. I still need to take mine back off and clean the road salt off the frame horns before it turns them into rust.

OK, here is the answer:
the ARB winch bar *does* fit in the 80 while still in the box. With the second row removed, it does not even protrude behind the lowered tail gate. With the second row in, it might, I don't know for sure. Width wise there is plenty of room. Height wise, it fits but only with a few inches to spare.

Now the real mystery is why that box is so tall? The bumper inside does only go to about halfway up...

I'm happy we got that to fit, we usually do take them out of the box though. Without the box they are easy to put in, same thing with rear bumpers like the Kaymar.

My guess as to why the box is so tall is that it would be cheaper and easier to make one box that fit all of their bumpers. When doing freight, using the same size package every time makes it very easy to set up and bill out. Plus ARB may get discounts for ordering bulk boxes?

Box size may also have something to do with how well they fit in bulk into standard shipping containers for the ship ride over.

Be sure to recycle that cardboard Eric!

edit - don't scratch that ARB either Eric. hehehe :flipoff2:

I would have thought that space is at a premium in shipping containers, but what do I know...
that thing is surprisingly light, surprising given how sturdy everybody says these things are...

I think you could slip it on the front and put some bolts in to get it home, no problem. Mine slipped on in 30 seconds. Then finish the install at home, as others have said.

The lower threaded holes were full of crap and corrosion -- we used a tap to clean out all the dirt. The other holes were clean enough to tighten the bolts by hand.

Mine took a bottle jack and wood to spread attachment points to fit my cruiser and to my knowledge the frame is straight on my cruiser.....quite a job because of the allignment, etc......had quite a few beers during the process.

have a homeless guy help you install it in the parking lot and let him have the box.;)

I didn't try to put the box in the 80 but I did manage to get the following in the: ARB winch bull bar, slee rear bumper, slee step sliders, slee 6" lift, tcase skid and ac skid and other small things.... that was quite a load and even had the hatch closed all the way for the 50mile drive home.:D :D

Remove from box .. load into 80. Load box securely onto roofrack. Drive home.

ARB bars shipped to ARB USA are boxed in Seattle and not in Oz. The box is generic box that they use for other stuff as well. When we got our container from OZ direct, the bars were boxed in OZ boxes and they were a much better fit for the bar.

My question is what is e9999 going to do with the box that it was that important to keep it :D Doghouse? Drip pad for garage?

eh! I resemble :) that! My rigs don't drip!

I'll take the 5th on the box. I'll deny forcefully that it may have something to do with being forced to sleep outside if I keep spending all my meager earnings on this rig...

and yes, that sounds like a good explanation for the size. I knew they couldn't be so profligate with premium container space. Odd that ARB USA wouldn't mind though.

this thread won't die, will it....? sheeesh.... Let it!

The answer is obvious. Remember that Eric has that homemade gawdawful kludge front "brush bar" that looks like it came off a train. He plans to sell it on eBay and he needs something to ship it in.

I'll have you know that this thing is great! As strong as an ARB or likely stronger and can be used with the OEM bumper in place. Just the ticket for those who don't want the full bull bar and need to deal with Bambis, Elks, or Roos. Perfect for occasional use. Takes 15 mins to put on or take off. In fact, now that I think about it, I should keep it on.
Great, I tell you! :)
