in order to keep harmony i am considering it , why does the guy have to give his rig away , i some what agreed with the caveat that she also sells her new xtrail with 5000 kms on it , it has very little room in it more an all wheel drive car than a suv , she figures ( maybe corectly ) that we could save a few thousand dollars each year by only having one vehicle to maintain and insure , i am not going to drive an x trail the rest of my life i may as well have a mini van .

i am thinking an 80 maybe in my near future , maybe a 100 series ! i would be way more interested in the cdm 80 with a 1hdt . would think after selling both our vehicles we could swing this .

I bet she wants the creature comforts of the X Trail and you want the trail ready of the Cruiser. According to my crystal ball, a locked and lifted JDM 80 series is in your one car family near future; otherwise, the planets will all go out of alignment and universal chaos will prevail. :D

So you would sell the BJ60?

If you like the BJ I would not sell. They are hard to find in nice condition.

My wife would NOT approve of selling our '60 to get a newer vehicle! In fact she's rather taken with the '55 now!

A '60 is a fine vehicle for a single car family, why not stay with that and ditch the X-Trail? You can always tell the wife that for the money you get for the X-Trail you can fix and drive the '60 for a few years!!

The x-trails payments and depreciation could rebuild the 60 a few times over.

I will always hold to the point with my 60 when the wife complains about the costs that her 2003 vw she owned payments were 500 a month. We sold it cause the payments and depreciation were like 750 a month.

A 60 is a good solid one car vehicle for a family. Good on fuel(diesel only here, of course), and cheap enough to repair yourself.

If they sell the X Trail now with about 5,000 kms on it they are going to take a nasty depreciation hit. Two years it wouldn't hurt so much. However, if you are making payments with not a great intrest rate, then flogging it could make financial sense. Still the X Trail will only keep depreciating and has a very limited capacity in terms of sports and utility. While a well kept diesel cruiser only seems to go up in value; and we all know the sports and utility value is way beyond any hyped station wagon.

kept two years or sold today...... sold today will be the lowest lost $$$

two years payments and interest(thinking he has payments) is quite a bit. Right now it is worth the most it will be worth. The loan goes down slower than the depreciation does. They catch each other around year 4. SO when you sell it then or a month or two early the remainder on the loan will be closer.

Right now the gap is bigger. You owe say 30K the vehicle is worth 25k. 5k difference,

In two years you owe say 24, its worth 21. 3k difference. But you just paid two years payments and interest.

IMOP the best way to save money is getting rid of it immediately. Take the hit. But the hit is still cheaper than two years payments, depreciation.

Anyhow thats my 2 cents...... A 60 is flatten out on depreciation. And actually might appreciate.

I agree. I thought the magic number was 2 years.

If she wanted a Nissan so badly they should have gotten a Safari, then I could undertand her wanting to keep it. :grinpimp:

she's cute and young
sell her!
keep the Cruiser and kid

but that's my opinion
and somehow I'm still married

i have considered steves idea it would be way too costly we have a town house , the xtrail is paid for it was a gift ( yeah i know spoiled ) from my father in law , if i ditch the x trail he likley wouldnt talk to us for years and that may be tough considering he takes care of my one and three year olds . i would consider swapping her x trail for a nice lx 450 , then using the money i get from my truck to do the essential mods to the new cruiser .

Yes, you could come out ahead quite nicely on a used US 450 which would keep the wife and father-in-law happy and leave some good cash to keep your trail rig and for some additional mods. There are tons of them all over the US at good prices. You can be sure that whatever she has to drive she won't want the custom pin striping. IMO, some things are just better to keep her's and his. If insuring two vehicles is an issue, then just do temp insurance on your Cruiser for when you want to do trail runs.

That makes things a little more difficult! Unfortunately it looks like the best option is not an option at all. Can anyone say "White Elephant"?

If I remember your post when you were given the X Trail it was because your Father-In-Law wanted your wife to have some dependable wheels to get her and the kids around town. So, as long as you replace it with something newer and dependable, everyone should be happy. Sadly, things are not always so rational when it comes to 'out-laws' and gifts.

All I can say is that when the cruiser is gone , everything else goes after. You will be mad that you gave in. Good Luck!
p.s. you will miss the 60

this might sound like the best bet. although you'll probably take more off a hit trading it in than selling it yourself. if you can convince her father that while it was a great vehicle that suited your family fine...it might be a tad tight once you start thinking more kids (that may or may not convince him though!:eek::eek: )

you can even let him pick out the LX :grinpimp:

ok under the circumstances you have to keep the xtrail. There is no way to sell a gift this soon. Sorry but that's the truth.

But since you have no payments on it, And I don't know if you have payments on the 60... there is no real answer here. Your in the best situation.

Wanna save money? Put fire and theft insurance on the 60 for the winter and take the xtrail together. or bus it.

A roof box will help for the xtrail not having enough space.

Now I don't you from Adam, but I can rest assured will not except a gift of that magnitude from my in laws. Love em, but.... I hate indebtedness. Spoiled? no, your fortunate to have the help. But I like to choose what my wife drives. Not her Daddy.

I'm sure the xtrail is good vehicle, albeit small it gets the job done. How many kids do you have?

I have 3 and the 80 series works. But they are old trucks eh? Hard to trade a dependable gift for a 10 yr old(newest 80) truck.

If you have to do something....
Best bet to make a father in law happy and wife is a combo 100 series. new for her, rugged for you.
