After I got my truck back from the paint shop this week I noticed there was a whiney type noice coming out of the left side of the engine and its driving me insane...I found out the idiots that painted it left the hood off and it got rained on one night...could the bearings in the alternator rust that fast an cause it to make that sound...if so would WD40 fix it or do I need a new alternator (by the time I pay for the bearings to be replaced you could just about ge a whole different alternator)...Thanks for any input..

Alternators hate water, and will corrode fast.

WD40 will work to displace the water if there is still some in there. I would think rusty bearing, would squeal/scratch/grind noise. Is the alternator charging? Worst case scenario go buy an alternator and throw it in the truck incase you loose the alternator. If it hasnt died with in the return policy period, you are probably ok, and just return it.

Vaccum leaks can make a whining noise as well. My truck howls at me REALLY loudly in the morning, but once it warms up it goes away. I figure either the problem will go away (my most sucessful mechanic technique) or it will get so bad that it will be easy to find :D
