why is this gizmo (A/C connector) leaking?

outside temp was 60F but of course it's not supposed to go much below 40F I think.
The best one I've seen (in a Honda Accord) was going down to 38F or so only with similar temps. Even saw it spelled someplace that it should not go below 40 or so.

Yeah, it's hard to drive with icicles shooting out at you :D
I bet if you clean off that joint it would take a while to look oily again.

I can't belive no one has an issue with just letting freeon escape into the atmsophere, don't any of you have kids? What kind of poluted enviroment are you planing on leaving them? This stuff is horrible for the enviroment, and no i'm not a tree hugger, just an a/c licensed technican that knows what this stuff can do if let escape. Thats why we recover it and not just crack the line slowly and let it escape.
The dealer may recomend replacing the receiver/dryer due to the fact they can absorb moisture from the enviroment any time the system has a leak. Theres no way to tell if it has abvsorbed moisture, so the best repair is replace it and evac and recharge the system.
Just my little rant for the day!!

I was under the impression that it is CFC that are a problem with the ozone, not the 134?

I am 100% with you. I would NEVER let R12 or R134 into the atmosphere. Even though R134 is considered safer at this time, who knows? Also respsect what good a/c shops are charging as they have to use expensive equipment to remain legal. Last year any shop working on a/c in Cali had to buy an identifier to make sure what they were pulling out of peoples systems. When a shop pulls R12 and R134 mixed they have to pay big$$$$ to dispose of it properly. Continuing the rant :D

Back when a can of R12 was $.89 we used to set a few out at the 200 yard line and "plink" them. :slap:

There also used to be horns powered by R12 cans.

I agree that refrigerant should be captured whenever possible but it is not always easy to do. In many cases where the system needs sevice, most if not all, of the refrigerant is gone anyway.

I would not let any refrigerant escape on purpose either, frankly. But I also never read that the 134 is anywhere as serious an issue as the Freons.

As far as recovery of Freon, though, let's not forget that the stuff has been described as more valuable than coca!ne when smuggled in the country. So either you are letting a paycheck escape if you release it, or the sad-eyed looking dealer commiserating with you about the high cost of capturing it is actually contemplating getting his next Benz with your little stash... :D
(not our good friends above, of course... :))

I will chime in now that we have degenerated to rants. I love my r12 system on my truck. it is colder than the wifes 02 maxima. so cold I have to turn it down a little on long drives or it freezes you. I got the R12 for my rig the most environmentally concious way I knew how. I used my shops pump system and drained 4 cars that were totalled of their r12 and then dumped it inot my truck. eco happy and wife happy to have ac on the way to moab all is good in the world.

No expert by far, but the A/C guys here on campus, claim the new refrigerants may be friendly to the ozone, but a very nasty chemical none the less!!
