Who is THE MAN?

Someone mentioned Jim C. for carb work. He is also one that knows the 2F inside and out.

Not that this would have anything to do with your problem but you may want to check to see if the gas tank has ever been replaced under the recall.

RECALL??! I've never heard, nor can I find info on that one. Do you have a link to the report?

I've had my eye on cruiserparts.net...good source for parts!

LOWTIDERIDE: could you show me a link to an illustration of the "fuel cut off solenoid" ?

60WAG: same thing, pic of that "centrifigal advance mechanism"

Please keep the ideas coming

Not that i am the man but I think I have seen this problem. Try removing and plugging the P, Q and R hose on the EGR vac modulator. No need to remove them from both ends just the Vac end. Plug them with #6 or #8 screws. See what happens.

Ensure the VAC system is hooked up correctly and works.

Same thing for the HAC system.

i have seen these issues cause a very momentary "stutter" which seems to be fuel or ignition but has to do with emissions.

Mine tank had already been replaced under the reall when I bought it 7 years ago. Call the dealership with your VIN# and they should be able to tell you if it has been done.

Hey, where'd you get the emoticons at? I dont see any.

Bums.

Sorry, HZJ60---emoticons are for gassers only! :flipoff2:

Derek, I put on a NAPA smog pump over a month ago--only $89 + $20 core charge, and it seems to be working well. (In fact, my gas mileage went up!)

60wag - when I was having that "run rich" problem, it was because my sog pump wasn't hooked up right. Once I got it squared away, it was fine and not having the characteristics of running rich under load. Stage one of the ABV directs air into the air injection rail, which is into the exhaust ports - but am I right in thinking the added air would effect combustion? If it doesn't add to the cobustion mixture, does the added air raise the combustion chamber's temp for more complete burning? (and it's fresh air, not recirculated exhaust - that's the EGR's job)

Just looking for clarity, not trying to hijack.

I'm still voting for some emissions failure and say have them test it with an exhaust analyzer - but do check for loose/broken wires in the low end ignition wires. Also call the dealer about the tank recall. IIRC (If I Recall Correctly - for whomever asked) there's something about the way the tank breathes that could effect fuel flow. Call them, it's free.

Swank60 - On the air injection, its my understanding, that the air added at the air injection rail helps oxydize the unburnt fuel that has already left the combustion chamber. It might raise the temp of the exhaust manifold but I be surprized if it actually affects the temp inside the cyl. Maybe someone else here knows more... I'm not too clear on why there are two places air is injected - the air rail and pre cat converter. I know the exhaust gas temp is higher at the manifold than just pre cat and should burn more unburnt fuel. Maybe the air rail feature helps get the CO reduced before the cat comes up to temp? I'm guessing that Toyota couldn't meet the emissions rectrictions with simply adding air pre cat and the air rail was a patch to get the vehicle approved in the US. Anyone here have any insight into emissions systems on non US FJ60s?

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread. If there are comments responding to this post, lets start a new thread.

derek.. i dont have a link but...but start up your rig and disconnect the the green electircal plug on top of the carb. (oh and do this when the rig is running rough) and see if it stalls.. if it does reconnect it and lis for a clicking sound from inside the carb when you do it.. if ya dont hear it.. you may have a bad ground or the fuel cutoff selinoid (sp?) might be bad...if thats the case cool cruiser has the part on sale for 15 bucks right now.

good luck, post back what ya find

Junk: Oregon. We have our uptight moments too, if you're referring to my "friggin" comment.

dd13: I appreciate the insight. I'll post after it has been tried, along with the other suggestions.

Jman: you suggested the NAPA smog pump to me in a thread some months ago. I need to just do it.

thanks again everybody. This stuff about the air injection and emissions is totally over my head, but interesting to read, and going into the LC Theory folder.

If any other input comes to mind, please post it!

might have been mentioned. But let the cruiser idle in the driveway, then go under the hood and wiggle around all the elelctical stuff having to do with the ignition/coil/dizzy ect.......if it cuts out.......ya got a winner.
