Crap I think I blew the head gasket on my HJ60. Lost the belt at the future shop and drove it to the Royal Oak Canuck tire. the temp wasn't in the red yet but close. Smoke coming from under the hood etc:eek:. I also finally learned how to use the emergency kill switch as the truck wouldn't shut down. Well they can replace the belt but if the gsket is blown:censor: I will need somone to do the work. Who does it in Victoria? I would take it to RADD in Duncan but I don't think I can make it. I live out in Sidney. Thanks Guys

Don't let Canadian Tire touch it. They've screwed up my vehicles every time I've brought them there for even the simplest work. They couldn't even put the directional snow tires back on rotating the right direction. I personally met with the veteran mechanic "Who'll be doing the work".

Log Cabbin, now run by Midas muffler, has been good to our family in the past. I've not delt with them in many years, but they're one of the only shops I'd consider taking a vehicle to. I don't know if they know a thing about Landcruisers. They're at the corner of Keating and West Saanich.

Good luck.

You could rent a trailer for a day and tow it to RADD. Trailer rental is only $40-50 if you can find something to tow it there with.

Good point. Marigold automotive is another one locally that I understand has dealth with JDM, so they could do the work. I would trust Canuck tire to do anything past the belts. I probaly could make it there. They are on burnside. Maybe the smoke was just the pressure release from the rad cap,:bang: but I have a really bad feeling. Thanks guys.

Is the new belt on? why not check for water and oil where they aren't supposed to be and if all is good take it for a local drive and see what happends?? You might be making mountains from mole hills.

Oh s***! I feel your pain, lets hope the high temp hasn't cracked the head either (ask me how I know :crybaby:)

If you have a BCAA card they could tow it for you, free to RADD's if you have the right membership level.

Did you verify that the head gasket is actually blown? (EDIT: I didn't see that Cam already posted the same question above)

Cheers J.

with any luck the smoke was from oil,a/freeze,paint etc burning off engine although i dont like the fact the engine was so hot it wouldnt shut off.
The moral of the story----if you loose a fanbelt or blow a rad hose or do anything that could cause overheating dont even think about driving.Call a tow truck or go buy the part needed and fix it right there.

Yeah The new belt will be on Tuesday. Yeah I know about the belt. Should just left it that being said the truck already didn't shut off the second I noted the belt went and at that time no over heat condition. I noted imediately my power assist break were out and the charge light came on charge light came on. Well she has 400,000 plus KM on her and she has served me well over the past 6 years. Maybe time for something new.

I'll know when the belt get spopped on on Tuesday. The head is my big worry too.

If you can't get it to Radd:

I have had good luck with Midas at Keating & West Saanich. Great people too. There is a mechanic there named Darren who loves working on cruisers.

Also try Jas at Jas Toora Auto (552 David Street). A very good mechanic and honest as the day is long.

All of these shops have worked on my 3b.

Good luck!

X2 on Midas, was Log Cabbin before Midas bought them out. Last time I was in the same staff were still working there.

Hey Al,
Maybe try Simoes Auto where Jason C works, you can probably make it there from royal oak. Not sure how busy he is, and I think they might be closed around christmas (as a lot of shops will be). Give me a call if you need any advice. I Wish I could do it for you, but I'm way to busy. Hope it works out!

You don't need the belt on to check a couple things. First check oil to see if it is brown and not black. Then pull rad cap and run to see if you get excessive amounts of bubbles from rad. If you have neither on both you should be okay. If you show one or both symptoms your head is done. Options find another engine or rebuild. Getting the head done will be more than just a head. Chances are rocker arms are done, precups might be done, water pump, thermostat, rad cap, hoses, coolant, machine work for head. You may ask how I know, cause I use to work on these at Radd and have that same engine in my truck. This is the stuff I can Think of off the top of my head.

Thankfully when I got the belts on everything was okay. I guess I hit the panic button too soon. Thankfully all is well. Thanks for all your input and advice. Merry Christmas

I did a similar overheat experience when I forgot to properly tighten the rad cap before taking off on a trip. The heat came up quick but not into the red. The next week I noticed I was loosing some coolant but could never find where it was going. Like you, I thought the worst. If you see the coolant level going down, check the weep hole on the water pump before freaking about a leak in the head. When they get hot they tend to smoke the pump bearing seal. Mine seemed to only be leaking when hot and driving. It never left drops on the pavement. Only found the leak when I checked the weep hole right after shut down.

Wilson & Proctor Ltd are the best diesel shop on the lower island. No question in my mind.
