Hi everyone, I recently purchased a 1997 LX450, which came equipped with the Bf Goodrich 285/75/16 tires and they need to be replaced. Well with this being said, I want to replace the tires with the stock tires which I believe are the 265/70/16 Michelin LTX tires and what I want to know will I get better gas mileage with these tires or should i just go with the BF Goodrich At's? I would think that the Michelins might get me better gas mileage, but I would appreciate everyones input. Thank you

The michelins are some of the best (street) tires made. Great ride, mileage. More expensive than BFG ATs at most stores, I think.

It depends if you want an AT or a street tire. For road and light offroading, the BFGs are good, you can take them places you can't take the Michelins.

The stock size is the 275 width for an 80.

Cheers:beer: and welcome! :flipoff2:

I would get the Michelins if you do mostly street driving. I recently got a set of BFG a/t's and have been having trouble with the balancing for smooth highway driving. If you go off road much an a/t tire would be better regardless. Any reason you are narrowing your choices to only these 2?

If you want a smoother ride you could also consider these, I've heard good things. I know you've heard this before, but no matter what you do you will get bad gas mileage, if thats your concern do 68 on the highway instead of 75+... I notice 1.5 or 2 mpg better with a calm driving style. You did buy a capable 4x4 though, so buy the BFG's and enjoy!

I had Michelins (LTX 275/75R16) on my truck when I purchased it two years ago. Tread was 50% then and I drove them another 15K, and they still have just under 3/16" tread left. I recently installed my Toyo MT's (285/75R16) and noticed my gas consumption has gone up almost 20%! I will be reinstalling my LTX's and will only use my Toyo's when I go off-roading. My advice is to stick with the Michelin's for hwy driving.

The michelins are great road tires. Smooth, quiet, good all weather traction, and they last a really long time.

You couldn't pay me enough to put BFG A/T's on any truck. They don't balance, in the heat they almost melt away they wear so fast, in the cold the compound gets hard as steel, and the tight interlocking tread will load up with mud/snow and refuses to clear at anything under 75 MPH... you may as well be driving on slicks at that point.

I wouldn't have a second thought taking LTX's anyplace that you could get with BFG's **of comperable size** <-- caveat placed to keep flame-throwers at bay, and be a LOT more comfortable on the highway road trip getting there

Seems a no brainer to me for the LTX's if you are going to go (near)stock sizing.

I have the LTXs and I really like them...they are rather spendy though at nearly $900 for a set of 4...

PS. as others have said, gas mileage should not be a consideration, it sux either way! (If you want gas mileage buy a Prius) JMO

thanks everyone

Hi there, I wanted to personally thank everyone for your input on my question. I guess gas mileage was a slight concern and I'm well aware that this vehicle is not a gas siping ride. I failed to mention that I'm looking of a smoother/quiter ride. Currently with the BF Goodrich T/A's seem loud and I always thought that a Lexus/Toyota would be quiet. Anyways, thanks again

Ive run both of these tires and while my 80 has TA's and our other Toyota runs LTX's. They are both great. If you want quiet and smooth, IMHO the LTX's are the best tire available and will wear well. Worth the $$ beacause will last twice as long and perfoem better than lesser brands.

Try revo's. They wear well, do great in snow and are quiet on the highway.

Another vote for the LTX's. I've bought three sets of them for various 80's over the years and IMHO you can't get a better street tire for a DD. Very quiet and long lasting.

Pete

I'm also running stock size LTX tires on my rig. They are definitely lighter and smoother than a 285/75 BFG and will for sure increase gas mileage. I think the LTX tires run very smooth and they are a great choice.

Unfortunately, the LTX generation that are on my truck do not have any open treadblocks on the outside edge of the tread, so the truck hydroplanes like no other whenever there is water on the road. I will not be purchasing another set of LTXs for my LC ever because of this. I know the LTX A/T has a more open tread pattern than the M/S.

I'm looking at a 255/85 tire for snow reasons come the fall, but I can strongly recommend Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor for on-road use. They are quiet and rated for Severe Snow Service (Mountain Snow Flake Symbol).

I have Bridgestone Dueler A/Ts on my LX now and I have almost 80k miles on them. The Michelin's I originally had I think I got 60k miles out of. This is my second set of Dueler A/Ts.

I disagree about wear in heat. In Alabama, my BFG AT's would not die. I wanted them to, because I hated them so much, but they looked almost brand new in terms of the tread 40,000 miles later.

My buddy put 70,000 miles on a set of BFG AT's on his extended cab z71.

Another vote for the LTX, although I'd hardly consider them "street tires". That would be more along the lines of Michelin's lattitude or LT series or their new crossover product..whatever that's called.
To me street tires are ultra quiet & smooth. The LTX have a bit more grip than those.

I always get the H-rated p275/70R16s. In fact, I'll call ahead since they frequently only have the S-rated.
I once was fitted with the S-rated and didn't notice until I left the tire store, I immediately knew something was different. Turned around and found they put the S-rated on eventhough i paid for the H-rated. The ride just seems a little firmer with the s-rated.
I'm sure they woulda been fine, I'm just a creature of habit.

I can only comment on the BFG A/T's; they last a long time, are louder than my BFG M/T's:confused: and are nearly worthless in any kind of mud/deep snow. can't comment on MPG 'cause I don't care much (not a DD):flipoff2:

what's the biggest tire size that will fit in a 97 fzj80 w/ 16" wheels, no liftt kit?
