Gentlemen,

I’m certain that there are a variety of opinions regarding tire size and tread type, and I’ve done a fair amount of research on the subject, but I’m going to throw this out there to you guys and see where it goes…

I am presently running a set of 33x16 Bias Ply Super Swampers on my 79 FJ55. Recent SBC 350, TH400 auto trans with the stock 3:73 axles. PO did a shackle lift with new leaf springs x 4. I like the ideal of going with 4:88s but have other projects right now. I’m 60% sure that I’ll stay with the 33” - Maybe 35s......

Work, the economy and family require that I live in the suburbs of Seattle – although Montana is on our short list. I mention the living situation because my rig is a primarily street queen now and for the foreseeable future. I love driving her but the tires are a real concern. Depending on pavement type, I am all of over the road at times and I don’t feel safe driving the freeway past 55-60 MPH.

I am definitely going with radials when the times comes but want to retain a high degree of aggressive tread when I do get her off road. If we pull the trigger on Montana, I’ll need something that’s good for snow.

So, what works for you guys for tires?

Thanks in advance for the replies / advice.

i have been through my share of tires, and there are some good ones for your consideration, i will add parnelli jones dirt grip. considered a radial all terrain but they got some aggressive tread and ride smooth and quiet. also look at the cooper discoverer s-t, never had them but gets good reviews.

I would hesitate to run those over 55-60 MPH as well...I had a set of 35" SSRs and hated them on the highway. They took pounds of weight to "balance".
Love my Toyo Open Country M/Ts, took very little weight to balance and have performed flawlessly on mud, snow and rock. Sometimes all at the same time.
