Where to start turn signal diagnosis

well...

Hmm. I guess the flashers for the hazards and the turn signals are near each other, and maybe related? It just so happens that last night after I used my hazards, and turned them off the turn signals stopped working? Maybe that is diagnostic of something? My Hazards still work this morning. I looked at one of the wires that goes from my left front turn signal, followed it towards the firewall and noticed that within the bundle that exact wire had some loose tape around it, it's well covered but tight enough that it would be very hard to pull it off and re wrap it. I wonder if that could be the culprit for all of them not working. I attempted to remove the steering wheel and didn't get to far. Also attempted to remove the instrument cluster and couldn't pull it out enough to find the flashers which I think are back there? I can take pics if needed?

I have a mechanic right on the corner, I told him what was going on and he looked at me like I had an infectious disease:rolleyes:.

The flasher for the turn signal and the flashers is the same flasher. Mine worked much the same until I tore it apart and cleaned/adjusted it.

Try the flashers a few times - then the turn signal, then the flashers again. It will probably "just start working" for a little while anyway.

thank you

Ok. Can you guide me to where the flasher is so I can pull it and rebuild it. I thought it was behind the instrument cluster. I removed the two screws for the cluster and could not yank it enough to see anything behind it. Must be something I am not doing.

If I get to the flasher I assume I then go to this..
Hazard/TurnSignal Operation

BTW here is a pic for you:

sweet!

Thanks CAZ! I did wiggle it and now we are good, working turn signals. PO said I might need a new hazard switch.. he thinks it is the culprit of the intermittent problem with TSignals.:bounce:

Thread revival. I just got an 82 BJ42. I preemptively ordered a 24V bulb kit and sure enough the passenger tail light was stuck “on” when I picked up the truck. I cleaned up all sockets and bulbs front to back. Everything started to flash just fine. No need for a new bulb. However when I turned the headlights on, pass side sticks to "on" again. Turn off the headlights - it begins to flash. I cleaned fuse panel and will hit all the grounds I can find. But was wondering if anyone has experienced this scenario to save me some time. No issues on driver’s side.

It was the flasher.

I cleaned it - nothing

I actually had to adjust it to get it to work. I bent the little "L" shaped stop on the one side to make the contact closer to the electro-magnet (after trying a few other things ;).

I thought somewhere in this thread that someone mentioned that the flashers are more powerful than the turn signals - it must have been another thread. That is correct - the same flasher does turn signals and hazard - the hazard draws more power. My turn signals just didn't have the oomph to overcome the gap.

Where is the flasher? I've checked fuse at fuse pnl and hazard fuse under hood. Hazards nor blinkers work at all. Please help!
You do know you are in the FJ40 and 55 forum...right?

Hi all,

Have you changed the light bulbs in any of your front or rear indicator lights.

I found the following out. Your hazards ligts will work but your indicator lights won't?

When I did my rebuild I had new lights all round, hazards worked but no indicators, the problem was the light bulbs that came with lights.

If the wattage of the bulbs are to low the indicator unit won't work, if you read the info on the unit it requirers a certain amount of wattage to pass threw the unit.

In the front indicator lights there are 2 bulbs in each light and one bulb in each of the rears (3 bulbs per side). I increased the wattage on the rear bulb and bingo they worked. The new lights on the front had small wattage bulbs propably so they don't melt the cheap plastic housing they come with now.

So check that maybe you replaced a bulb of late with a lower wattage or one of the two bulbs in your front indicators has blown.
Hey I saw this is an old post
But if you had a moment I’d appreciate a little help
Can you tell me what wattage of those rear bulbs I need to be looking at I seem to have my rear left light turn signal not working
I’ve tried about everything but I can’t figure it out so I thought I would try the ones you were referring to but I can’t figure out what watt bulb to put in there
Any help would be much appreciated
Shawn
