For those ASSuming I am DICKtating with my radio....you are dead wrong.

Has anyone here asked WHY I run power or have a radio like this? I think not.

Instead, you choose to knock my choices for reasons you choose to believe rather than basing anything on fact. That is what this forum is all about it seems. Most forums in fact are that way. People want to argue subjectively rather than objectively. That is just not something I can do. I am a facts person and will always TRY to base my opinions on what I know to be facts.

First of all, I have been on CB Radio for 36 years. I think I know the difference between Obnoxious and Polite communication.

For those making ASSumptions about my radio manners, I can assure you that I more polite than 95% of the yahoos out there on the road. I am not cussing, making racial slurs, derogatory comments about women, telling dirty jokes, calling my ex-wife a whore (albeit I do not have an ex-wife), making homophobic statements, or simply pushing a ton of power to annoy and obliterate all other radio communications because I think it is fun.

I put this Radio & Amp in for the same reason I put in a Cell Phone Amplifier and a SPOT unit along with a Lowrance HDS-5 in my truck.

These are all tools that I require for my application and for my safety and well being of my passengers and loved ones.

I can honestly say that certain folks thought I would not use my truck for its intended purpose when it was built. In fact, I had to correct a few things on my rig due to the way they were done because of this belief in the beginning.

Needless to say, I do use my truck for its intended purpose and they have already been proven wrong.

This is my daily driver and I rely on this vehicle to be highly capable, extremely reliable, comfortable, and fun to drive.

1st, I am surrounded by thousands of acres here. You hear nothing on channel 19. I mean nothing. It is just static. The ONLY people you hear are locals that are VERY far away (20 to 30 miles) on channel 22 or channel 40 typically. They ALL run power and the only way you can talk to them is if you are running a good rig like mine. I live in a beautiful place and I am new to the area. they have become good radio buddies and have helped me learn the area and discover the best places on earth around here.

EDIT --> Power at minimum is 1 Watt dead carrier. Less than anyone here is running and I guarantee I can still be heard cleaner, better, and further on 1 watt dead key with clean audio than any 4 watt radio here. It is al about audio quality and audio modulation not power. Also, I am running a super clean, high quality A/B type amp. The crap most truckers run is class C which generates nothing but noise, hash, splash, and trash. My A/B Amp is designed to put out very clean audio with minimum distortion or interference. It is not a junk amp.

2nd, I do drive long distances (NC, AL, VA, KY, MI, IL, ME, GA, Etc.) including out west on occasion. And, as anyone who lives out West can tell you ... it can be pretty desolate and isolated on some of those roads. You cannot be heard in an emergency with a stock rig and if you have no cell service, forget it.

3rd, I am not a wrench by any means. This is not something I really ever wanted to learn or do. I enjoy more creative hobbies like nature photography for example. If I break down and I can't get help, I am stuck.

4th, I get around fine but I am handicapped with no feeling in my leg below my right knee at all. I have to wear a brace to walk and those who have seen my truck know that it has handicap plates on it. If I get in to a bad situation, I am not easily capable of fixing my truck nor am I able to hike long distances out of a remote area. That is for sure.

5th, my best friend is a serious outdoor buff, hiker, and camper. She is much younger and in better shape than I am as well. She loves to be in the wild. This truck makes it possible for me to enjoy the outdoors with that person despite my limitations. It is quote enjoyable and it makes us capable of sharing something we both like with the safety and ease of access I require.

6th, I put a Segway and Segvator on my truck so I could be more mobile despite my handicap. I got a lot of crap about that when it was being installed. However, this has made me more mobile in certain situations where long walks or hikes on easy trails are not feasible for me.

Bottom Line - In a remote area or off road in an emergency, I am not one to be without communication.

So, for those ASSuming I am blasting all the time. I actually run my Radio with the power ALL the way DOWN....almost ALL the time. This actually gives me better audio modulation than if I run it ALL the way UP all the time. In normal situations, this is all I ever need and I am not STEPPING on anyone this way.

I only crank it up when I am testing the rig or tuning the radio for 30 seconds on channel 1, 20, and 40 or when I actually NEED to be heard.

In my posts, I always try to be factual. Sure, I can have an occasional response to a bad situation that others disagree with and I will quickly admit I am wrong if I am. However, I don't always see arguments backed up by fact in this forum and it is hard to buy in to anything that I do not see as fact.

Sorry you guys chose to attack me rather than ask the simple question ... why?

EDIT --> I almost forgot. I am a filmmaker and one of the primary reasons for having this truck built was to transport my aging but extremely talented films crews to remote locations. They often get dropped off with all their gear in these locations and can spend days if not weeks sometimes camping out acquiring footage.

Rich,

Sounds like you are a candidate for a HAM license with APRS :)

You had me at #5. Well done man!

Cobra DX19 IV in ashtray?

Has anyone fitted a Cobra DX19 IV into the factory ashtray location (95-97)? I picked one up last year thinking it was the same size as the Uniden 510/520 models in terms of dims, but it is actually 3/8" larger in height, and 3/4" longer in length. I've started taking the dash apart and it appears that it will fit into the ashtray opening, but only be completely removing the two plastic "ears" on the faceplate and dash used to secure the faceplace and ashtray sliding mechanism - something I'm not too keen on doing.

I have the DX19 III (no RF gain) installed in the ashtray location. I removed the two metal clips the the screws grab on, and used a Dremel to slowly trim the plastic ears on the dash until the radio slid in snugly. It didn't end up taking too much off IIRC, and the radio fits nicely. Let me know if you want some photos of the trimming.

Sure. I'm about to start to some work to clean up some aftermarket wiring left by the PO and then I will try fitting the CB...

Thanks Adam.

Sorry for the photo quality, I couldn't find a real camera!

I followed Slee's instructions about modifying the rear of the radio to get it to sit as flush as possible, but it will fit in pretty close without the mod.

With the mod

Hope that helps!

Thats slick!

Well this thread reminded me that I wanted to install the Cobra 18wx in the 2nd DIN. I had purchased one year or so ago. Attempted to install, failed for god know why and sold it. Been using the handheld Midland since. Anyway after reading this thread and looking at some other about the install I ran down and picked up another Cobra18 and 90* elbow. Install was straight forward. Must of had too many step 6's last time I tried  I also installed the FireStick CB/FM splitter jobby (again something that has been laying around for almost a year )

very pleased with the result and good day :D

Thanks for the pics Adam (the trimming is exactly what I ended up doing). I got my Cobra 19 DX IV in late this afternoon. It indeed is a very tight fit. I added some foam strips on the areas surrounding the CB when it is tucked inside the dash as I thought this might prevent any noise if the CB got loose (although I don't think this will ever happen after getting things installed). I soldered some wire to the existing speaker and feed it thru the external speaker jack for the addition of an external speaker(s) in the future (I hope this works, as the speaker jack I had was straight and would have caused the CB stick out further). I also purchased a self stick mic holder and added it to the dash. Overall I am very pleased with the install. I fabbed a brkt for the 4' Wilson antenna I purchased and bolted it to the PS upper lift gate guide/support. The brkt is made of 16GA and is a little weak (side to side) but it should do the job. I still have the wiring to complete...

Hey Steve, nice install! That bracket is cool, pretty much the same thing that Firestik sells. FYI, I bought a 18' coax cable and ran it under the centre console, driver's seat, and then to the back of the truck following the stock wiring harness under the door sills, and I drilled a hole in the body (under the rear door) to get the cable outside.

I have an SWR meter and cable. We should meet up when you get the cable installed to tune your antenna before you use it.

Ebag333,
I did a little searching, but could not find anything on your cb install. If I missed it, can you point me in the right direction please. If you have not yet posted any pictures on the mini radio shack cb, would you mind posting some?
Thanks,
Cook

You probably didn't find anything because I didn't post anything.

It's very similar to the Uniden install on Slee's site.

Slee - Uniden CB Install (Toyota 80 Series Land Cruiser)

One thing I did was to remove the top cover of the CB unit, and then used the ash tray holder metal (the part that normally holds the ash tray itself) to hold it in place. Since it's just thin pot metal, it was easy to bend the bits that needed bent out of the way. The only tricky part was I did remove the little drop down that's there for the ash tray light as it gets in the way. It provides an incredibly stable anchor for it, and no need to modify a pig tail for it.

I would snap a shot of the front, but it really doesn't look much different than Slee's install.

I have my console torn apart to add a new radio/cd/ipod player, a ham and a cb. The minute I saw your post I thought of doing what you did, using the ashtray retention metal for the cb (One less thing to worry about). If I can squeeze the time away from work and the family it should be done next weekend.

Thanks for the idea.
