Where to get some powdercoating done?

Why do you believe that? The bumpers are spray painted now and are getting surface rust where I've scraped them on rocks, etc and the front bumper is pitted from road crap. I was thinking powdercoat would be tougher. Thoughts?

Maybe a bedliner material or something?

Rocks will take off spray paint or powdercoat ... but you can touch up spray paint with more spray paint. And I've had some powdercoated stuff where a scratch lets the moisture in to rust underneath and then everything starts flaking off.

I know that's not always the case - Lukes bumper for example. But I'd like to know why it sometimes happens and sometimes not. Some difference in the process?

That said, I'm looking for a tougher solution also. The front of the hoops on my bumper have rust coming through after re-painting with rustoleum about a year ago. No physical damage, scrapes, etc. - just coming through the paint.

Justin recommended some "tractor paint" that he gets from Big R ... may give that a try next.

Rustoleum is cheap, reapairs easy and goes on nice. Huge fan of the walmart bedliner, just make sure the metal is really preped before. You can buy it in cans to do easy repair as needed as well.

I put on an all surface enamel paint on the bumper I made for the tricycle. It holds up extremely well, but I did not follow the recommended application instructions and did a crappy job, because I'm just impatient. I'm betting it would have come out worlds better if I had sprayed it and not rolled it on. I did not buy the primer the guy recommended either. I got the stuff from Sherwin Williams. It's a super thick durable paint. It's the paint they put on gas station poles.

I was after some DTM (Direct to Metal) paint, that's the stuff you see on commercial doors and handrails. It's super tough too, and probably cheaper than powdercoat, yet it's pretty damn expensive. I think it should really be sprayed, but I see painters putting it on with brushes all the time.

To hell with spraypaint. It's coming off after 6 months, and I get tired of masking and re-applying that useless crap.

I bought some stuff at Dale's paint called Hammerite for the inside of the FJ40, and I was hugely dissapointed in it. It was much cheaper than POR15... which I bought later, and it kicks ass. Can't remember if POR15 is UV rated though.

I just had the FJ40 wheels powdercoated and they applied it very thin. I don't think it's going to hold up for long, once again, I went for cheap. All coatings I think is the name of the company. They're over by the old dog race track on Nevada. they were $40 a wheel, everyone else was $80-100. I'm pretty disappointed in that, used to have a great guy in Louisiana that was super reasonable, and always applied the coating thick. That's the guy that did my 4runner bumper. It's been rolled, in wrecks, hit trees, that stuff just don't come off. Can't seem to find anyone like that here.

Good guy, gave me a good rate on sand blasting and powder coating...more times you go to him...more of a deal he makes up for you.
