so...i need to do some work on my rear driveshaft and was just wondering where people have gotten it done. i have a front shaft that almost fits in but at max compression is just a little bit too long to fit in the rear or i have some other odds nd ends kicking around for shafts as well. if it comes down to it i may just end up doing it myself, just thought i would see where people have gone before and how much it set them back (if its gunna cost me $50 to get it done...might as well have it done then spend $30 on tube and still have to do it myself).

that or i have heard that 3x.188 round tube is pretty close...anybody have any of this stuff kicking around?

ThinkingI spent around 200 or more to lengthen the rear drive shaft with metric tube, weld and balance. Mike at western drive train

ya....thats a little bit on the spendy side of things...i think im going to start looking for some 3" tube and a roll of tape...cheers!

yep . western drivetrain is a good shop.

I went to south island shysters and found a long yota shaft in the mud with f'd yokes and it was only a few bucks.

Mikes pretty good about putting random junk together for you.

Even gave me back the driveshaft that some douchbag punk kid driving a ghetto SOA 60 in nanaimo stole from my yard when I found it in his rack.

(kid stole it right after I gave him some 60 springs to help him out cuz the dumb s*** was driving around with broken main leaves. Awesome eh?)

that said, I think there's a size of shed40 that's about right, it's not too hard to do it yourself with a dial guage ( or in my case a sixpack and a coathanger....)

abel's the man to ask about that...

I've got a couple of driveshafts around here.

How long a shaft are you looking for? It's always easier to shorten a shaft than lengthen one. The ones I have were pulled from a V8 converted 40... All the shafts are shorter than mine.

I have a front shaft from a stock 40 (i think) and its just a little bit too long to fit in at full compression. what i had planned on doing was cut a shaft, leave a few inches at each end of the section to be sleeved and then use 3'x.188 wall DOM tube, checked it out today and there is about .010 difference so that souldnt be a problem. thing is i need to get this done asap...before saterday type deal

I measured the spare shafts I've got. From the mounting surface of the yoke (by u-joint) to the outer colar of the shaft by the splines are 17.5 and 18". They both appear to be stock unmoved 40 shafts.

I believe shafts can be nodded like a cut and turn on an axle if you're looking to shorten them. I had two done that way back in 96 when I swapped in the V8.

Send me a PM if they would help or if you have more specific questions.

Sorry I know it's a heep site.

Cut out your 1" or whatever and re-weld.

Yep, I did that with a shaft. Surprizingly easy. put back together, tack weld on 4 sides, mount in truck, spin by hand with a coat hanger clamped to truck and touching shaft to see if it's running true, and massage the tack welds until it is.
then zap the s*** out of it. :hillbilly:

I did it with a rear shaft, and I don't seem to have any vibes

I don't have any issues with vibrations either.

I paid a guy to do it but had the same done.
