I know it's dry as hell, but wondering if anyone is up for wheeling this coming week. After weeks of hosting visiting inlaw's I really need to get out. Could do around Cowichan area and try to match up to same day as our pub meet? I'll just take a day off. Monday-Thursday?

My engine seized on Friday, so I won't be going anywhere until its fixed .... :bang:

Very sorry to hear! I thought you had it rebuilt fairly recently? With such a catastrophic failure after rebuild, maybe you should follow up with the engine machinist? Any sort of warranty? Any idea what may have happened? Dropped pre-cup? Lubrication failure?

But yes, now might be the time to move to a 3B if you can find one in decent shape around....

The shop I used for the last rebuild is useless when it comes to warranty - or most other things I am beginning to realize. My current plan is to pick up an Amayama short block so nothing has to be rebuilt. Just add a few more bits & pieces (cam bearings? & oil pump) and I will have pretty well a new engine.

My thoughts are that the oil I was using (10w-30) was too light and I should have been using 15w40. On the really hot day on Friday the oil was just too thinl

What brand oil do you use? I did have the Canadian Tire MotoMaster brand 10w30 semi-synth oil break down to a water like consistency on me a few years ago when I got my motor good and hot while towing. It was frightening seeing it drain out so quickly (cold even) when I changed my oil afterwards. When I had my motor apart for other reasons at a later date, I could see the wear that had happened to the bearings from that incident. I'll never use that oil again.

However I've never had any problems with the Shell Rotella non-synth oil 10w30 or 15w40. I do use the 15w40 in summer and 10w30 in winter though. But I can't see the 10w30 causing issues under normal circumstances even in really hot weather.

This is the stuff that broke down on me. NEVER use this oil.

On an aside, this was my motor temp at one point while towing in 36C this summer up island by Courtney. Shell Rotella stands up just fine to this abuse year after year. As does my 2LTE running Evans Coolant it seems, haha. Poor little abused motor. Truck/camper weight was around 8500lb on this trip. I ran A/C while going 100km/hr. Any slower and freight trucks were constantly passing me rocking my whole setup in a scary way.

The oil was just a guess - but I don't really know for sure ...

By the way - when & where is our gathering this week ?

I’m too busy or I’d love to go. I gotta get out more too, next time for sure. Hope you find someone

Yeah, I know it's a busy time of year. I'm not really one for planning ahead either, haha. Club is sort of a different group than it used to be, with people not as much into the off road stuff now anyhow. Cruisers are getting too expensive to beat on I think! Anyhow, thanks for the reply. Might just get out on my own.

I have most of the latter part of next week free, other than my mission to put my engine back together.

Just gentle stuff for me tho, don't want to hurt my only wheels till the 60 is alive again

Could rattle my way out to Cowichan or something maybe?

Cool; maybe we can figure something out. Could keep it logging road stuff; at worst might have to do a couple little gate bypasses.

Cowichan would be our best bet I think. I'm pretty open to anything though. There are some really cool high elevation spots near the end of the lake on the North side that I was thinking of checking out. Could head up high to a good view point of the lake and mountains around that area maybe?

Just pick a day that works for you, and I'll book it off.

I'm off at 7am tuesday, and not back till Sunday, so I could even make saturday work ?

I guess if it rains I might have to finally put the bikini top on.

Can't believe my truck has been outside for 2 months without any lid on and I haven't got a wet ass from the seat yet :hillbilly:

I suppose if we made it Saturday it gives Mon-Fri working folks a chance to join still. Do you start work really early Sunday?

Definitely been a dry run. Of course, as chance would have it maybe it'll rain the day we're out. It's either water or dust though I guess.

I'm always 7-7, just the am and pm changes.

So yeah, up at 5-530 Sunday.
