Wheel failure

Sold our 4Runner to friends many, many years ago. They just shared this photo with us...

Wow! Never seen a failure like that! Thankfully it was on the rear and everyone was OK.

holy crap, I'm glad I ditched my OEM's long ago..

That is probably the exception and not the rule. This is the first I've seen of a defective OEM wheel.

So... they were just driving along and the wheel suddenly fell apart?

There must be more to this story. Tire over-inflated? Curb hit? Pothole? Did the tire have that Slime crap in it?

Crazy. I have seen some aftermarket wheels that have a seam where two pieces were joined together. The factory wheels are one solid piece though. Glad everyone is ok and I bet that was scary!
