i replaced the wheel bearings in the front left of my 89' 4runner, it's an IFS rig, and the bearings keep coming loose again and again. what could i be doing wrong that allows the bearings to keep coming loose over and over?

I assume there is a star locking ring that is folded over the nuts to stop them from backing off? I am just guessing because I have never been in the front of an IFS setup before aside from helping out a friend on the trail.

yes there is, something is telling me that he is not using the locking star tab
btw every time you adjust your bearings and or replace them you need to replace that tab. i buy about 20 of them each time i am at toyota

you must set the bearing preload, for starters. then install the lock tab. Nat, I disagree with you on replacing the lock washer each time. If you got the money, fine. But there is no reason to do it every time.

Granted if the metal is mangled, or shows signs of creases, replace it.

mangled star deally

yea, that lock washer deal looks to be pretty bent up. I'll go grab a new one. any advice for installing it? just put it in and bend every other tab over one of the nut's flat sides? thank you all!

well if you want to risk it for a $1 part go for it. i did that once and my wheel bearing locked up and threw my ruck sideways at 70 mph not fun:eek: wheel bearing welded it self to the spindle turns out that small tab that fits into the slot on the top of the spindle broke causing the bearing to loosen up

got it

ah ha! the tab on the inside diameter of the lock washer had broken off so the washer could turn freely, but nuts were locked together, and both nuts were backing off. for a dollar and thirty seven cents, I replaced the washer. Thanks for all the help!

What brand of bearings are you using? I had the same problem with the CarQuest bearings. The race and bearing are purchased seperately and do not match up correctly. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what i am doing wrong, till a mechanic friend had the same problem with the same brand of bearings. I got a set of Koyo bearings and wow it does not loosen up now, and i can adjust to factory spec without any issues.
