how bad is it rubbing? can you just grind the calipier. 3.5 should fit. could be the way the rim (aftermarket) was designed. or you could try a 1/4 inch spacer
Is it the lips by the spoke cut-outs that rub? 4Wheelparts warned me their black rock crawlers "may" not clear the calipers. They have a similar shape on the cut-outs. I bought 2 used sets of wheels (aluminum) for my cruiser before I bought a set of steels that actually cleared everything.
Note: 1 set of aluminums did not work with the 71 drum brakes (hit TRE), but did clear (barely, wheel weights would not clear TRE)) when I did the 79 disk front axle swap.

Too bad 4wheelparts didn't warn me. I found out that the reinforcement lip on the spokes stick out too far after I bought five tires and rims and had them shipped to me. I had to grind the calipers, and use 1/4" spacers. Wagon wheels clear pretty good though.
The backspacing doesn't affect whether the wheels rub the calipers. It's those "D" cutouts that are hitting. 3.5" backspacing is the requirement to clear the tie rod ends.

as jason said...i had a set of 3.5 rims and they ground the calipers down for me themselves....i was told they woudl clear, but they didnt.....now i have a set of 2 backspaced rims...and they still wouldnt clear, good thing the prior set of rims cleared out all the excess metal off the caliper though. not the best way to do it, i know, but i was assured they would clear
I bought custom US crawlers, 2.75" bs and the cutout holes have a huge lip on the backside, .250 spacer cured the problem although the stock LC calipers look to have plenty of material to remove if necessary
