I've been scanning older mini trucks for a few weeks now. I have seen countless older trucks and 4Runners that say everything runs just "blown head gasket". Is it wrong for me to say this is a common for these vehicles back then? What causes this? Is it usually an easy fix? Should I not even inquire unless they know what the problem is?

Which engine?

Very common for the 3VZ-E V6, which is why Toyota has a SSC out for it. PITA job, I hate doing any work on that engine.

Not so common for the 22RE, until you really get a lot of miles, say 200K or so. I replaced my HG at 185K as a preventive measure. Easy job, there are numerous web write-ups on how to do it.

I gotta disagree with ya on the last statement. I've done more HG replacements and seen more HG issues on the 22re than the 3.0. The 3.0 receives a great deal more publicity about the HG issue, but I have no doubt the 22re goes through near as many (total numbers, not % based).

The 22re main failure of the gasket is caused by green coolant. the coolant is usally added to the red, and when not flushed, it causes the by pass holes to clog, swell and blow out.
the v6 problem was due to delamination of the gasket, and is a recall

HUH?

Never heard of that. ever.

Well, I have. I've seen the results too. Not a 22RE, but on a 4A in a Corolla. Crappy green Prestone s*** corrodes thru the gasket, gunks up the coolant passages, makes a mess.

Toyota red 50/50 with distilled water. Only way to go.

I don't have any stats on which engine blows more gaskets. I would suspect there were more 22R-series engines built, but I got nothing to prove that.

The 1fz has that problem also when the coolant is mixed.

I'd guess that the 4 cylinder has had WAY more units on the road, same basic design for the 20r-22re. The 20r/22r/22re/22rte were used from 75 to 95, while the 3.0s were only used for eight or so years.

One of them has a recall, the other one is known as one of the best engines toyota has made.

HG troubles on a 22r series engine are far fewer percentage wise than the 3.0 and they are usually due to improper maintenance.

Overall numbers may be close, just because of the sheer number of 22R/REs on the road.

FYI it's not based on color, Toyota calls for a low silica fomula. You can test for the levels. Running preston green anti freez is just fine in these motors but requires frequent change intervals.

I just have to say the 3vze just got a bad rap with head gaskets due to the re-call. Mine ran and probably is still running on the original gasket at 250k miles. I also think people stay quite about any head gasket issues on the 2xr series motors because they are just so damn easy to work on compaired to the cramped working area of a 3vze.

It's not he color, I run green in the 80 and red in the t100, but the mixing is what kills them

agreed, but its the mixing of ethylene glycol based with propylene glycol based, I always read the lables because there is no standard on color and base fluid. Also Dexacol or whatever it is called is BAD news in a toyota motor.

I just found out I have a back log of the HG jobs to do..... all 22Rs....s***!
