What's the deal with the 3L V6?

I had a '91 4Runner with a 3.0. I bought it with over 200k on it and I wasn't aware of it's reputation and I didn't know it's history. Although it was reliable, it was godawful slow and got terrible mileage, like 16 on a good day. I then got a Tahoe 5.3 V8 that got much better mileage, 18 or so. Then I got a '01 4Runner with a 3.4 and what a difference- reasonably quick and over 20 mpg. I would highly recommend a 3.4.

My DD for the past 5 years has been a '90 4runner with the 3vz-e and a 5-speed. Bought it with 300k on the original engine, has around 360k now. Other then some moderate oil leaks and old parts wearing out, the thing is still running strong.
Like others have said, the fuel economy is terrible (averaged 15mpg last tank) and power is lacking.

I searched for months trying to find an extra cap P'up with a 22RE and a 5spd. The 2 I did find were overpriced. I reluctantly bought a 3.slow auto truck. Engine has not had any issues since I bought it just gets 5mpg less than my 85 4runner & my 97 3.4 4Runner but both of them also have 5 spds. I need to get my 89 3.0 4runner on the road to see how it does. Somebody put headers, electric fan and aftermarket air intake on it.
