Hey guys,

So I sold my hilux and just bought a 2000 loaded (no leather) standard 4Runner with 200K kms (120K miles). One owner, family vehicle, dealer maintained, no stains and NO rust...which is rare for Canada.

Anyways, now I need a truck/project to play with and still be able to haul garbage to the dump.

When I sold my Hilux a guy from Ontario bought it and he used a "Middle man" to do all the shipping. My sale of the hilux went well and in that sale I mensioned that I had been looking for a good project FJ45.

Well what do you know this guy actually found one for me!! I have copeied the email below and attached the picture he sent. After reading the same info and pictures I have what would you be willing to pay for this truck?? I truely believe it is legit but just don't want to over pay for a POS.

Re: FJ45

I've been trying on this one, but not much progress in the way of info. We do have great news on the price, which should hopefully make up for it.

The seller is away so communications have been difficult to say the least. He's still in touch, but sparingly. Getting info out of him has also been tough, and I think it's because he doesn't really know much about the truck himself just yet. It was intended for a full restoration, as he says the truck is quite solid and wouldn't take much effort.

It's a 1978, and we're told it's nearly, if not all original. It does has a set of fenders with it, which are in good shape. It's only missing a pas. seat, which he plucked for his truck. He says it ran well before it was parked, and it would likely take a bit to get going again, like fresh fuel and filters, clean up the contacts, new plugs, etc. Nothing major as it was a good runner before, and we're told it's super low mileage. Still no exact number on it though, but since most of these have 300+ kms on them, we'd assume this one is likely 100-200K. Might be less though, and really it's a moot point for a truck that will likely be all redone anyway.

It looks like the Alternator is new, and the tires look decent. Not sure how many leafs should be in the back but looks to have quite a stack of them.

He got it from the daughter of the previous owner, who has since passed away. It's a clean title, but she will need to go in to Insurance Company and transfer it over properly to keep it that way. It's a Canadian truck, but we're not at liberty to disclose the exact location. We can arrange shipping to you, and the cost would be about 500-600 as quoted, though that would require it to be a runner while getting shipped.

Since we can't get more photos and info at the moment, we've pushed for a lower price, and we got it! He knocked off $1,000, so the truck is now $4K as it is. For a good FJ45, that's not bad at all!

He says he's away until April (works out of country), but has someone who can make arrangements on his behalf if we do want to proceed. He also said when he gets back he'll be cleaning it up, putting a bit of work into it, and listing it, likely for twice the price.

Let me know your thoughts on it, and how you wish to proceed.

without a close personal inspection by you, I'd say $1000-1500 as it is.
looks like ALOT of rust just from the pics you show.

$4000 is a good (and probably the right) price for that truck. It needs at least the fender and apron, which are easily sourced, and the headache rack, that awlteq on mud now reproduces. The roof has a hole in it.

In good running shape, with a decent body and interior it may appraise out at around $9k, but don't pay that much for it.

Where are you located and where is the truck?

I paid a bit less than that for mine. I could have driven it home and it had less rust in the cab. Box was about the same.

No bad full floater rear axle, The inside of the bed looks solid the hardest thing I see it gonna be the hard top itself looks rough. Ofer them 1500 and go from there depends on how bad you want it. I persoanly would not pay over 2500 only because I know how hard it is to find a replacement top. Great Project for the right price Keep us posted

I am in Calgary and the guy that has the info will not tell me where the truck is becuase that is his business to find vehicles and deliver what you want. Which makes it tough because I can't get any more pictures. I have offered him a finders fee to go and see it, just to see if he will bite.

Judging by the pictures I'd say BC interior. Could be Ontario but the trees don't quite look right for that. BC would be better for you being in Calgary. Don't worry about the rust, I can help you out some there. Check out my sig links when you're bored sometime.

You did say you had a successful transaction with this guy already though - right?

I had every intension of swinging by and introducing myself once I had purchased a 45! Ya one transaction has been good but to not see the frame, roof, floor boards, etc. But just never felt comfortable about buying a vehicle without setting my eyes on it. If I had to guess it would be the interior BC also but that only leaves 100s of hick towns to search....:p

I just recently purchased a '66 fj45L with a clean body, but no motor/trans for $3500. Anyhow $2500 would be a good deal. Doesn't look to bad, but truly check the rust.

Two things would have to be straigthened out before I would buy it.

Original owner has died, sold by daughter without a title. New owner out of country. Not sure how much work this takes in Canada but the original owner daughter would have go to DMV and go thru a couple of hoops to get the title. Is she willing to do this? The new owner out of the country will require a little extra also but I would be more concerned why the title wasn't transfered when the current owner bought it. Sometimes it's just easier to sell as parts only vehicle.

Second your shipping qoute was for a driving vehicle. The two rocks keeping it rolling and what looks like a missing rear driveline this might take some doing.

Before I made any type of deposit I would have to know it is running well enough to drive onto a trailer and the current owner has a title in hand. You don't want to get suck with a extra charge by the shipper and then find out you have to deal with the PO's daughter for the title.

I once bought a FJ40 with no title. But for the price I couldn't pass it up. It was local and I know the history of the vehicle. Worst case I knew I could double my money parting it out if I had to.

Good Luck

We don't have titles at all in Canada. Even a house has no "title" per se. All you need is a bill of sale signed by the last registered owner. A smart purchaser would just take the VIN# to the DMV and check for leins and theft report before you pay.

How do you handle this when the last registered owner has died? Which in this case has happened. Here I think you would need a death certificate, a will showing the vehicle is now yours or a judgement from probate court if there was no will. I know my FJ45 from CA took the original owner's brother a year to get a clean after his brother's death. But this is out west, in the east it seems many states don't issue titles for anything older than twenty-five years and a bill of sale is all you need. I guess it just about location.

If you have a bill of sale from the daughter, and the dead guy isn't gonna report it stolen, then no one is going to come and claim it back.

Now, if the daughter is not the rightful owner there could be trouble. Say there was a sibling or she just sold it without the executors permission, that person has the right to send cops to get it back and you are out your money. You won't get charged with theft or anything as long as you have a bill of sale. But you'll lose the vehicle with no compensation. You could take legal action against the seller but that would likely gain you nothing.

It goes back to a lein search on the vehicle before you buy. If the seller is not the registered owner then you would have questions for them with regard to how they figure they have the right to sell it. Buyer beware. Say the lein search turns up a bank that has first dibs on the sale proceeds due to an outstanding car loan - you as the buyer must make sure the bank gets paid or they'll come after you for the balance. So you write the check out to the bank for the full amount of the sale and let the bank give the seller the extra.

I'm no lawyer but that's the way I understand it and it has worked for me.

An old freind of mine bought a ski boat and had it for 6-7 years before the guy who really owned it saw it parked at the shop one day and sent the cops to get it back. My friend ended up paying the actual owner for the boat so he could keep it and gave the guy he bought it from some "street justice" in the form of a little tustle.

To the OP - sorry for the hijack
