winch

Is a pto winch an option on a 60? I just bought a LU4 Braden for my PW.

I have an SMU3 (or some nomenclature like that) which I had mounted on a Pig and will be going on my big 40 when it rolls out again. A little large for the front of any '60 smaller that TippyR. But you can't beat it when you've got something that positively absolutely has to be pulled. Or when you need to reach waaayyy out there to get a hook on it. (Rated at 10,000 pounds of line pull, proofed to 2.5 times that rating, 475 feet of 3/8s cable on the drum and 80fpm line speed with a one ton load without exceeding nominal wear rates on the worm gear.)

Braden Winch Company (now owned by PACCAR) in Broken Arrow Ok. They make all sorts of commercial and industrial winches. All PTO and/or hyrdraulic AFAIK.

Like I mentioned, a heavy duty winch like this is kinda large. This one is about 20% larger in all diminsions than a Toyota PTO. I had it on my old Pig for a while, but I would not put this on most Cruisers. TippyR or Tiny sure (both on 52 inch Michelins with 'mogs and rocks' respectively), but the size of the winch on the front bumper and the reduction of approach angle would be a big hindrence for most Cruisers.

I have a Garwood as well. It is certainly big. The LU4 is not as big but it is certainly much larger than an electric. No foreign 60's had a PTO option?

Is a mechanical or a hydraulic winch more powerful or reliable than an electric winch? If not, why buy a more expensive and larger winch when you can be more efficient?

Yes the PTO winch was an option on '6x rigs. There're a few out there.

For starters an electric winch is not more effecient than a PTO... Your engine has to turn your alternator which has to store energy in your battery which has to power the elctric motor... A lot more steps there than just having the engine turn the winch. Some degree of loss at each step. And generally PTOS are available with higher pulling power than electrics. And they're more reliable, longer lived, more accepting of abuse and neglect and much happier when being tasked for long periods at close to the rated capacity than any electric. And they are not necessarily more expensive (there are a lot of used PTOs out there cheap on the industrial side of the tracks if you know where to look).

An electric is much easier to use and for 99% of the people on 99% of the rigs that are used primarily for recreational pursuitsd and 99% of the use that a light off road rig will put it to it is a better choice.

But when it comes time to pull... to pull hard, pull fast, pull far and pull long... PTO (or hydraulic which is basically the same thing with a "fluid drive") wins hands down.

I have a factory fitted Aisin 24V 'motor over' elec winch on my 62. It's very similar to the Warn and if that's any endorsement then a Warn winch would be a good buy - they are very popular here in NZ where we really only have access to the big brands. A few individuals are importing Chinese made winches which have all the right specs and cheap price, but haven't been torture tested by anyone yet.

My winch is rated at 10 000lb

Are there any specific companies where one could find PTO winches rebuilt or new? How about advice on where too look for a used one?

I * think* that the factory electric winch on the 6x series IS a Warn, just badged differently...
