I have a red top on my 4runner that is six years old and still works great, I have yellow tops on every thing else because I noticed that under heavy winching my red top would peter out before the yellow tops. Batteries used to last me about a year, until I started using Optimas.

that number is a group size. and 34 will work in a yoter.

personally i dony like optimas.

i have had three and they all ended up failing at the worst times and all prematurely

i use standard wet cell.

but if you want the ultimate battery, one with a 10 year warranty and many hours of reserve try Oddessy batteries

My red-top is 8 years old now, still doing fine. It's been run down totally dead at least twice now, and totally recovered.

Just read a review in the 11/07 Consumer Reports on auto batteries, the Optima Group 34 was rated #2, just behind the Sears DieHard Platimum. The Oddessy was not rated.

I've had fairly good luck with the red tops I've owned over the years. I had a red top in my Jeep when I owned that and I have a single red top in my diesel pickup. The 4Runner will be getting one when it needs a battery.

The Odyssey is an excellent battery too if you can spend the extra money.

It took me 7 years to kill my first pair of Optima Red's. Then I ran the best deadbeat another year in a street car (had to jump it if it sat a week). I've got two new ones again in different trucks now. I've heard of more than a few Optima's people bought that sucked. I kept my receipts just to cover my apples.

The optima I bought in 2000 lasted me 6 years before it quit. The one I bought in 2002 lasted me 6 months... I replaced 4 between 2002 and 2005. Got annoyed, and threw in a wal-mart trolling motor battery. It works MUCH better than the optima (left the ignition on for 2 weeks, turned it off, then started the truck 4 months later with no issue). From what I can tell, owners of the yellow tops have far less issues.

I recently replaced my Red Top in my 4R after about 18 months. The jump starting was a PITA for a few days, but you can't beat a 36 month FREE Replacement Policy. A replacement Sears battery in my wife's van cost me $90 after the 36 month Prorated Policy.

Optima's, at least out here in the hot SW (southern AZ) don't last at all.
Most people that I know first hand, that have run them (me included ;) ), are lucky to get two years out of them and then they die like a typical lead/acid battery (truck starts fine to go to work and is completely dead when leaving work for home).
BTW, as I'm sure some/most of you know, the Optima Red Tops are not deep cycle batteries and aren't made/designed for anything that draws them down the least bit, such as winching. The yellow tops are deep cycle batteries.
Odyssey's are simply the BEST that you can get.
They're the only battery that can "legally" be mounted inside a vehicle.
They last forever out here. When they do finally decide to pass on they won't just quite like the &#^$&^# Optima's, but simply start getting weaker and weaker.
They had vibration much better than the Optima's (and all the wanna be's/look alikes).
Not cheap, but well worth the money.
