in the fsm it is referred to as the steering knuckle bushing. every parts store i have talked to but one does not carry it. one says it is called a strut rod bushing. in the front and back of the steering knuckle where the cv passes through. looking at rockauto.com they carry strut rod bushings. but i am not 100% sure they are the right thing. can the old ones just be greased and reused? i'm getting a spinning/groaning sound on these cold mornings. it's intermittent and only lasts 10-20 seconds. any body else dealt with this.

i have the same noice...looking into it this weekend, sounds like a bearing to me

Have you tried going to Toyota? That's really the only way to guarantee that you will get the correct part, that fits the first time (make sure you have your VIN). These are not expensive, you don't wanna mess with getting the wrong one.

It would help to give us some info on your vehicle so we don't have to assume.

i havent used the toyota diy site but thats probably gonna be a good resource to get a PN in case the dealer is unhelpful

you can testy the free play in that bushing on a ifs rig by simply grabbing the axle near the knickl.e and pushing/pulling on it

if your hub was unlocked then the axle shouldnt be turning, thus eliminating that part as the source of the noise.

unless its got ADD then it always turns

so theres a bushing IN the spindle? my axle does move a little from where it sounds like the noise is coming from...

should you do the bearings at the same time if you dont know the last time they were serviced?

edit: mines ADD

inner bushing 9038130006
outer bushing 9038130003

i plan on doing my bearings and ball joints next weekend and figured since im in there ill do it too, if that is what it is.

cool I JUST talked to toyota this morning about bearings Ill call as soon as my guy gets back...

did you check to see if the axle moves in your bushing?

it does move maybe and 1/8th of an inch, slightly more maybe. i don't have it torn down or anything right now, that's just it sitting in the parking lot.

my left one moves about that much and the right doesnt at all

and the sounds coming from the left. I just ordered those part numbers and have the wheel bearings sitting in front of me...

1 bird with 2 stones?

There are also 3 different sized washer's that go just under the outer c-clip and nut-washer assembly. If the wrong size is used, or none are present the axle will walk back and forth when the suspension moves whether or not the hub is locked.

Part#'s..

NorCal,
What manual is that out of?

My old Factory Parts Manual I have. If you ask your parts guy any of those numbers realize they may be superceded by the newer part# or equivalent part.

The way you tell which shim washer to use is by not having anything on after the last locknut and tab'd washer. You insert the final nut/washer into the shaft and pull it towards the outside and check the freeplay space just about .001 short of the spring-clip indent. It factors in the wear the brass thrust washers face as they age and keeps it all from going "clack/snap" like when you're in 2wd open and unlocked and are turning into an upward driveway.

*That last part is what we used to check them during a test drive, just drive in and out of the dealership driveway.

did you fix your problem?

I pulled mine apart and the left outter bushing was around 1/8th bigger then it shouldve been.

today I have ALL new bearings race's, bushings, lower ball-joints and seals...

we'll see what happens...

if youre going to tear it down far enough to clean and grease, Id at least order the outter bushing from toyota its cheap and easy, and honestly if you didnt need ANYTHING else and was careful you could be able to just replace that outter

and just by looking at mine, if yours has any miles on it...id bet on it needing it
