What Oil do you guys use

I've got a 1980 FJ40 that has been completely restored (frame-off) and I too was concerned with what oil to run since the truck is over 35 years oldand engines today are vastly different than a 2F engine. My friend, who is a mechanic by trade, referred me to Brad Penn as he has a few muscle cars from the late 60's and early 70's and knows about the importance of higher ZDDP (Zinc / Phosphorous) content in motor oil for engines running flat tappet camshafts. So I called Brad Penn and got a ton of great information from one of their reps who after talking with an engineer or two called me back with a strong recommendation for their 20W-50 oil based on the 2F motor and the conditions I'll be driving (35 - 95 degrees F) the truck. I used their break-in oil for the first start and tuning and then dumped the 20W-50 in her after that. Changed the oil @ 2,000 miles and she's now at 2,050 miles on the odometer. I couldn't be more pleased with the oil pressure, how cool she runs, how smooth the straight six is running (like a finely tuned sewing machine) and peace of mind that comes from such a great company/product. I realize theses things are glorified tractors... but my truck is really special to me and spending a few extra $$ on great oil is cheap insurance in my book. I personally would highly recommend Brad Penn. Happy Trails!

Sorry to bump this thread but getting ready to start my newly rebuilt f engine. I was wondering what oil would be good for that? I'm leaning toward a 20-50 with zinc? Any opinions?

There is a loooooonnnnnnggggg thread in the 60 section.

Read away to your heart's desire.

I really like the Chevron Delo LE 15w-40. It's has every big equipment cert available and has a good amount of ZDDP for $12 a gallon.

Mobil 1 15w-50 is also excellent.

For break in at least, I agree to go with @cosmokramer 's advice on the Brad Penn break in oil. It is mega loaded with zinc to break in that cam. Joe Gibbs markets pretty much the same stuff at more than double the cost. I've got 5 quarts of it ready for my Big Block Chevelle, hopefully dropping in this weekend. Those engines have huge problems with the stock flat cams and Brad Penn is widely recommended for them

I like the 20w-50 idea for my 40 though, probably going with that

Wow! Thank you for all the great info. I agree it's my baby and a few extra bucks no big deal. I will look up Brad Penn.

Something to think about. This tool puts the cold start in to perspective.

Oil Flow

You can play around with the weights and the ambient temperature in the vertical ball bearing drop test

15w-40 compared to 20w-50
