I greatly sympathize with your pig carnage...I am currently about to delve into very similar circumstances, however I keep attempting to divert my attention elsewhere. THe sun is shining...I just want to drive the damn rig. What keeps running through my head is the Captain Kurtz/Marlon Brando line from the end of the movie - Apocalypse Now.. "the horror, the horror............:D

This thread will have a happier ending (so I hope).

I replaced the driver's sill with some 16 guage tonight. With the exception of part of the passenger's side, the sills are good enough to be reused, however my measurements were a bit off and I need to reshear the 16 guage to make it useable, and add some more 14 guage to lift up the rocker a little more. That should happen tomorrow and then I can weld in the new upper rockers. :)

Also, I should say that this truck's main purpose in life has always been to travel, on road and off. It's not going to be pretty, but it will be functional (which is why there's no pictures underneath the new mocked up rocker ;))

Mocked up:

I think we will all face this at some point. I'm loading up the inside of my rockers with rustoleum now while I have them apart, but I know it will never drain quite right again... the cancer will come. Maybe I can roll it before the rust breaks through again.
Lookin good in the second set of pics. I want to see a few when it's done.

Finished product!

I was really happy how these turned out, and when I say that, I mean that the doors still close. ;)

That said, the truck has a LOT of rust that needs fixing. Hopefully the new owner will address that soon.

That looks really good!

How do yo plan on dealing with the wheel well part: down at the bottom, and up where the lower corner of the door meets the pillar?

Mine is not quite that rusty, but the bubbling has gotten pretty bad, and I know I'm in for a nightmare once I start chipping off the old Bondo!

I dealt with the rust by selling the truck. :frown::D Because this truck will NEVER be a restoration, I think the best solution for it would be to imitate the wheelwell with some 1/2" rod and then weld patch material in between the body. I know many people just cut off the flare, however I think the factory design could be (with much difficulty) imitated by bending a 1 1/2" tube the shape of the wheel well, then spliting it down the middle, and then cutting it in half on the horizontal plane. Then I'd weld a lip back on the inside. Perhaps that's the hard way though. ;)

Good luck!

I'm working on my wheel well lips also. My Pig is also not a true restoration - its a wheeler. I hacked mine off, will weld the body to the wheel well, then either bend a piece of 16 ga sheet or use some cheep rubber lips from JC Whitney.

Thanks for the motivation! I'm going to the steel shop tomorrow for my LV's rear quarters! Man, I needed that! :)

Looks Great!!!
