Those look more robust then the vacuum caps I've been able to find.
 
You could use a small section of copper tube, solder a cap on that, then use a short piece of heater hose and a couple clamps to cap each heater tube. It would be bulkier, but provide the needed cap.

great write-up ... mine's working fine but the core's 37 yrs old so its a question of when, not if, for this job ...
 
Very nice! But, ummmmmmm. Isn't that little hose just going to let the coolant bypass going through your heater core? (Less restrictive than the core). I assume it will still get flow, but you would be bypassing quite a bit of coolant... (?)

It won't stop all the hot coolant from going through the heater core. It has been running in this configuration for decades without any problem of heating the cabin even when it's freezing outside.
