it is the fan bearing, not sure the proper name, but with all the plastic it looks like the water pump, but all it is is a bearing in there, yes mine went bad. it also has the fan bolted to the front of it. the 3.0 water pump is run off the timing belt, and can not be seen unless you remove all the plastic covers. when the bearing goes bad the fan wobbles and it throws the belt.
