What are these? Bonnet Clips? FJ40

I've noticed that everyone else has these clips on their bonnet however i've only got three holes which looks like it used to have them. What are they and what do they do?

Windshield holddowns.

For when you fold the windshield down. After you remove the hardtop.

I'd guess that 99% of them never get used, and are strictly ornamental.

not all early Cruisers have them, if a soft top they got em, if a hard top they didn't. in the late 60's I think they came on all hard and soft top 40/5. And there are at least 3 version(2 in the 60's) of them, depending on the wiper set uo and wiper motor.

I would wonder why they were included on vehicles that had the wiper motor on the outside of the windscreen too, because you cant put the windscreen down without removing the wiper motor assby, and who's going to do that? They also dont seem to be included on post 80 47 series.

Huh? What's wrong with bonnet I don't get it. Maybe you yanks call it a hood?

Thanks to everyone else who filled me in about these little aesthetic clips. I first thought they were to hold the spare tyre, then thought that'd be silly cause it'd be a heavy bonnet/hood to lift and there's already a mounting bracket on the back.

sure you can, thats why the hold downs and bumpers changed, the window will fold down even with the motor cover on the bottom of the window.

If you look at the windshield hinges on the later cruisers that came with the outside wiper motors, you will see that the hinge has a 'step' in it. The step kicks the windshield forwards AND UPWARDS as it goes down, clearing the motor from the cowl.

PLEASE dont trust me on this! TRY IT FOR YOURSELF.

Back in 1986, Jim Thompson, one of the members of Ventura County TLCA talked me into dropping the 'windscreen' on my 40 on the Ershim Trail. It is a moment I will always remember fondly.

Now you also know what the little loops at the top of the windshield on the inside are for, and why the windshield to roof gasket has little cutouts to accomodate the loops.

(My PO did not figure that out, and put the windshield gasket on backwards, which made it very ineffective on the trip home during the cloudburst...)

seeing how you mentioned the hoops. On a early hard top 40 without the hood mounted window hold downs..........there are no hoops on the upper window frame, really surpised Toyota made different window frames......why not just use the same one(with hoops) on all?

I suppose it took some extra effort to weld on the hoops. But then, did they make a cutout-less gasket, too?
